Chess Match: "Team RB" vs. "Fast Thinkers" Lurker Thread

Since the general chess thread is a little cluttered and some players didn't like the "spoilers" during the last team match I think it makes sense to open an extra lurker thread for this match.
This way players and lurkers who like to chat can join in here, while others can play their games undisturbed.

Good Luck folks smile

The last pairing had two players above 2050 and two more above 1800, so it's at least a slight improvement. cool
And I have no doubt that the brave players of Team RB will defend our undefeated record! (if not we can still make fun of them in this thread wink )

My predictions:

uberfish (1669) - Mitkis (1785) 1.5-0.5
If uberfish can get a wild game with lots of tactics he can win any game. However, he is not as strong in positional play, therefore I think he will have to concede one draw.

Makholm (1558) - HummingTheBlues (1752) 1-1
Makholm sometimes has great games, but also sometimes plays the occasional blunder, so I think this one will end 1-1

pindicator (1545) - franpedre (1757) 2-0
There is no doubt that pindicator is vastly underrated, while his tactical strength is only average, his superb positional understanding and solid play will net him 2 wins if he doesn't enter totally crazy positions.

regoarrarr (1507) - abeluchin (1676) 1-1
rego is a solid all around player with no particular strengths or weaknesses for his level of play, so I think this one is a tie.

Jkaen (1383) - KINGLOU (1669) 1-1

Jkaen's problem is technique, which means he gets great positions against much stronger players but has trouble converting them. If he keeps his cool he can win any game, but I don't think it will work in both games, so I am leaning towards 1-1.

DavidCorperial (1247) - a123xxsp (1633) 0.5-1.5
This is a matchup with a rather big rating difference. However, I am confident DavidCorperial can reach a draw in at least one of the games, maybe in both.

Total:
7 - 5 win for Team RB! hammer

pretty much the same rep that i have in my local OTB chess club ... i have a stupidly large span between when i play good games, and then I can, in the very next game, make horrible blunders ... They've even gone so far as to guestimate that my rating swings up towards 150-200 points depending on my 'form of the day'

French KIA and Alekhine, pindicator and his opponent introduce some nice variety early on smile

As White i've landed a Cochane gambit (sideline of Petrov's)
As Black i've ended up in a Rossolimo variant (which i'm frankly not sure i played quite right)

The book move would have been 5...Nf6 instead of ...Ne5.

If anyone lacks access to a database and is in a tricky opening situation, you can post here and I can upload a screenshot of what a database says about your current position (You will then have to choose your actual move by yourself of course, no move suggestions from me smoke).

Was really tempted to try Bc4 against the alehkine, but i read somewhere that black can suffer from space problems in the middle game so i think i'll stick to main lines. Which means i need ro look up main lines since i can't recall the last time i played against an alekhine defense

If RB is still underated by 100 points or so victory is possible. If not LOL @ Gustaran because were gonna get pwned.

The reason RB ratings would be deflated is because the main rating pool has a bunch of players who sign-up, lose pretty much all their games, then quit and therefore dump points into the system.*

Ne5 is bad because it allowed white to play d4 for free. But it looks like white didn't take full advantage of your mistake, Sian...

*On an amusing sidenote this happens with other games and in the USCF. In the USCF scholastic ratings are inflated for this reason. And Civplayers had a bunch of newbies sign up at the beginning of Civ5 which dumped a huge amount of points into the system. The players who would have won the cash kickoff contest got a bunch of points at the start and then stopped playing. Because it would be asinine to have the winners not to have played for two straight months C_S postponed it and added rating decay. This also has happened with FIDE:

That article MJW linked is a classic example of someone with a predetermined assumption constructing a meaningless artificial statistic to support his point. How does it make any sense to compare the rating of the #100th ranked player out of 5k players to the #100th rank out of 50k? It would make much more sense to compare percentiles. If you have 10 times more competitive players you'd expect to have 10 times more players of any given absolute skill level.

Some interesting stuff going on there...

Nice to see uberfish putting his new Grunfeld defense to good use, seems like Black already has a small advantage. Also very good play by pindicator, getting a good position with White and he may be even a bit better with Black.
Rego is following good booklines while Jkaen and DavidCorperial are still very early in their games.

The one thing that does not look that good is Sian's game with Black. That was not a particularly well played early game. Unfortunately, if you pick the Sicilian you can't really be out of book by move 5 or bad things will happen.

Looks like I underestimated white's attack in that game...
