[no players] Lurker Thread; May the 66th be a Revelation

Okay, lessee, lots of newbies on this first or second game, good, good, now settings on the map...

Player A: "I leave this to the judgment of others. If I were forced to choose at knife point, I would plum for room to expand and resource rich and a flat map. "

Player B: "General preferences are: (1) room to expand; (2) resource rich; (3) water provides strategic options, but there no huge Oceans to cross. PBEM39 contains an example of the sort of thing that I would like: http://realmsbeyond.net/forums/showthrea...27&page=14 (scooter's thread chosen at random for the screenshots). "

Player C: "I'm not a big fan of the "everyone has a 5-food Food resource and a Calendar happy resource at their start, and Copper and Horses within 5 tiles of the start, and..." maps. If the map is imbalanced but fair (as judged by one or more people qualified to make such an assessment, I'd be more inclined for that sort of thing."

I'm happy to review a map if you want another set of eyes.

Sounds like maybe a good candidate for large inland seas? Perhaps a small Highlands map with the highest sea level, and then players adjusted to avoid tundra or jungle starts.

4 players? Yeah, Inland sea isn't an atrocious choice. You could use Torusworld with the lakes setting and high peaks %age to get a highlands map.

I'd probably move away from Inland Sea and towards a Torusworld faux-highlands map but they are playing base BtS so fuck balance.

Yeah, five is a wide awake nightmare to balance, outside of something like Mirrorland (which is what Player B there was actually referencing). If they vote torus or up to me, I'll do a torus. Otherwise...*shudder*. Something Pangaea-ish, basically a star-blob.

Mildly controversial statement: I think Victoria is the forth best Financial leader behind Pacal, Willem, Darius. And probably even a better choice than Darius on Prince or lower settings.

Base BtS? Really, what are the other choices? Mansa? Too slow. Darius, that's the issue. AGG and PRO are right out. Lizzie? Same issue as ORG and hard to leverage both at hte same time (and that whole super fast Academy point is just plain wrong). It's not even that controversial.

This seem viable, folks? If so I'm going to insanely buff everyone's capitals to compensate for these noobles opting for Normal Speed.
