Damn you, Gavagai, I've been watching too many starcraft videos. Provisional naming scheme (probably used before at RB, but not recently I don't think)
Is there any reason not to pick Rome? The collection of benefits is just too strong.
Rome
Russia
Germany
Gorgo
Arabia
Is my provisional set of preferences, but Ill think more. I don't want China.

The big question in putting Rome above Russia is whether Rome can win the game before cossacks become an issue. I think it's doable, if you understand exactly how large the threat is (there is no over-protecting against cossacks), and if you protect successfully, you kinda win. The defense has to be very active though, so that they can't freely rotate in and out. Problems compounded by Russia's ability to take Defender of the Faith. Maybe Russia does deserve to be placed first...

Germany does not get going quick enough.
Gorgo is suprisingly well rounded.
Russia is a real nasty piece of work. High probability of first dibs on the pantheon means DotF and turtletown.
All around though, Rome is the strongest.
Arabia I do not get to be honest. You do not get any aid in getting that religion and the last prophet is something you need against religion crazed AIs not in MP.

What could Arabia be replaced with? Bored with Japan due to abundance of SP play. India is at a similar level, but not again. England and Norway — not on Pangea. Spain — not on Ancient start. France, Egypt, Kongo left. Oh, 'Murica, the uncertain +5 with BLANK.
I don't think anything is actually better than Arabia. Kongo, maybe, but we'll be sailing into unknown lands of Guilds rush and theatre projects with no religion.
Brazil! Would be hilarious in a game with Ichabod. But seems to require special handling and I never tried piloting it.

Based on history and mood in discussion threads, I think Russia and Japan will be picked for sure. JE, Choral Music, DotF all give reasons to care about religion. Two religions will be founded for sure, probably in a race. The third could easily get taken through Henge. I would rate Last Prophet as pretty likely to proc.

This is Vanilla right, no?
Then Russia is a sure pick by someone, as is Rome.
Japan I am not that sure, without a lot of shallow waters I would not count on it.
With Pangea and the +50% on hoplites Gorgo is a good bet.
To be honest any late bloomers I wouldn´t bet on. Fance renaissance stuff and upwards won´t decide the game.
Even with the undercover buff to France with the +3 CS for espionage, I would rather take America.
If you feel like Arabia take it, but others will have first dibs on religion and Last Prophet is unlikely to result in a decent religion.
Germany is a latebloomer with a decidely subpar performance because you tend to fall behind in the weirdest way with so many districts to build and no early game advantage.
Germany also needs a more determinded push to conquer CS imo, maybe even with a 3 warrior opening.
So, powergame wise:
Rome > Russia >> Japan > Germany > Greece (Gorgo)
I left out India because of your former PBEM with them.
Now if you want things to be interesting.
France > Egypt > Brazil

Yeah, I sent the picks in line with yours, only dropped Japan because its too vanilla for me, and still tacked Arabia on the bottom below Gorgo. Its very unlikely we'd go to fifth pick though. There is a small hack actually — if we pick Arabia, we are moving first, which may mean that we actually get the penultimate religion, not the final one.

Wow, Rome hate is strong. Getting it in fifth pick is hilarious.
Not as hilarious as getting pushed off top-pick Germany into second-pick Arabia. That hurts.

Rowain and Krill were clearly trolling with France and Egypt.

Fun fact -- I'm not sure when I actually played Rome last, many months at least, and I regularly fail to build aqueducts in my game, so this will definitely be very new. Baths look pretty insane, and there is no China, so we should have a good bash at the Colosseum.
