[Spoilers] Borsche actually thinks things through this time
|
Start posted. Seafood heavy which is bleh but it is Big/Small so I'm expecting similar starts for other people. The quad silks are kind of interesting, can put cottages on a couple of them for the faux financial effect, although wish they were all grassland tiles. 3 lake tiles might make this an early play for Maoi? Only 2 grass hills and 2 plains means there's only 8 + 3 = 11 shields at the capital naturally without watermills/workshops so an extra 7 shields from Maoi working the water tiles would be nice. Idk though. Probably too early to think on that.
Okay, well, I guess the play here is to go WB first. If I take expansive and a civ that starts with fishing, I can pop out the first WB in 6 turns.
I guess the ideal scenario here is Expansive with Rome/Portugal/England/Carthage. Pop out WB in 6 turns while researching BW (T13) and get my worker out on T15. Worker first doesn't seem to make any sense here. Won't have anything to do until BW comes in. Max hammers on the worker gets it out on T10, while I'd have to wait T14 for BW to finish. If I go max commerce I can get BW to finish on T13, but then the worker won't finish on T15, which is what I get with the original WB first sim. So here are the leaders I like with the civs Shaka of Rome (but honestly any expansive leader is fine here) Joao of Portugal Ragnar of England Any Expansive leader of Carthage (probably Suryavarman) Carthage gives me the most flexibility, so if it's still there, I'll take it. Cothons will be incredibly powerful on a B/S map. Unfortunately, if anyone else has a seafood start like I do (and even if they don't) Carthage will probably get snapped up in the first couple of picks. Portugal and England will be okay civs, not super great (I think I like Portugal more between the two). Shaka of Rome will be fun. The problem is that I pick 5th in the snake so all these civs could be gone by the time I'm picking lol. If I can't get Fishing/Mining, then I'll probably have to take a look at other Fishing civs: America Byzantium Netherlands Greece Japan Spain Vikings Of these I think my favorite UBs are the Hippodrome, the Nanban Harbor, the Citadel and the Trading Post. My favorite UUs would be the Beserker, Samurai, East Indianman, Counterclockwise Trebuchet. I'd have to do some more thinking on who I'd really want from these, but I guess I like Byzantium, Japan, Vikings the best.
Got Carthage but missed out on Sury which is a shame, although I probably rely on CRE as a crutch too much anyway. Mehmed and Mao are my next favorites, in that order.

1. MSCC-
Kublai Khan: Aggressive: Free C1 promo for melee and gunpowder units. -25% city maintenance. +100% production of Barracks, Stable, Drydock. Charismatic: +2 happiness. +1 happiness from Broadcast Tower. -25% XP needed for promotions. +100% production of Colosseum, +35% production of Library. Babylon: Agriculture/The Wheel. UB: Granary replacement: Garden. Requires Agriculture, cost 45, +1 health, no bonus production from trait. UU: Archer replacement. +50% against melee, no free strike, starts with Drill 1 and 2. Babylon is an interesting civ change since it basically has no synergy with any traits, meaning you can roll whatever you want with them and be fine. The only exception to that would probably be Charismatic, since the early guarenteed happiness + early guarenteed Granaries allows you to grow very quickly. The granary at Agri also allows you to delay Pottery for a little if you want to go for a religion or sailing for GLH. The Agri/Wheel tech combo here means they weren't hamstrung by a seafood only start like I was!!! Great stuff! 2. naufragar and Rusten- Alexander: Aggressive: Free C1 promo for melee and gunpowder units. -25% city maintenance. +100% production of Barracks, Stable, Drydock. Philosophical: +150% Great Person production, +100% production of University Japan: Fishing/The Wheel. UB: Harbour replacement. Nanban Harbour. +2XP for land units. UU: Maceman replacement. Samurai. Requires only Machinery (Does not require Civil Service) Starts with Drill 2. Aggressive + Samurai = Amphibious Samurai. I'm guessing they picked Agg/Philo to help with an early Machinery bulb, although I feel like Sitting Bull of China would be even better for this (Assuming that gives PRO CKN's get 4 free strikes, you could also easily pick up Amphib with 5 exp. I think? Would have to mess around with it). They probably didn't go China because they desperately needed to start with Fishing. Haha! 3. boak and GeneralKillCavalry - Bismark: Expansive: +2 health per city. +35% production of Worker, Work Boat. +100% production of Market, Aqueduct, Grocer, Harbor. Industrious: +50% production of Wonders. +100% production of Forge. Vikings: Hunting/Fishing. UB: Lighthouse replacement: Trading Post. Builds water units +25% faster. UU: Maceman replacement: Berserker. Starts with Amphibious. I've played a couple of games with Boak on our forums. He's definitely gotten a lot better, although still plays sloppy. He actually just won our most recent pitboss (a 4 team, 2 players per team 'vet + noob' game). Vikings will probably be pretty strong on here from a military perspective, but you have to leverage that and Boak can be a pretty passive/defensive player. Kinda suprised he didn't go for the Roosevelt - Great Lighthouse play, actually. I also wonder what other leaders he probably wanted. 4. superdeath - Suryavarman: Expansive: +2 health per city. +35% production of Worker, Work Boat. +100% production of Market, Aqueduct, Grocer, Harbor. Creative: +2 culture per city. +100% production of Theatre. +35% production of Library, Observatory. Korea: Agriculture/Mining. UB: University replacement. Seowan: +40% research, cost 150. UU: Catapult replacement. Hwacha. +50% against Melee units. Can kill. Korea is a weird civ. I'm not sure how good it'll be on a Big/Small map, given that people will probably want to rush to Astronomy over Education. Even if the Seowan is cheaper, it's not like he's leveraging Philo into an early Oxford, and he's passing up Galleons if he's going Education first. Hwacha's are also weird. They feel like they can be super dangerous - I remember a little bit of lethal siege on Civ4 release and it was pretty nasty. We'll see. 5. Borsche - Mehmed: Expansive: +2 health per city. +35% production of Worker, Work Boat. +100% production of Market, Aqueduct, Grocer, Harbor. Organized: -50% Civic upkeep. +100% production of Lighthouse, Courthouse, Factory Carthage: Fishing/Mining. UB: Harbour replacement: Cothon. +1 trade route. UU: Horse Archer replacement. Numidian Cavalry. +35% against melee, -35% against spearmen. I'm pretty happy with my picks (would feel really stupid if I wasn't). Basically Mehmed is the king of cheap things. Cheap Courthouses, Lighthouses, Harbors and Markets are all incredibly strong on a water map. Cothon's will give me my mini Great Lighthouse. Might even be worth a play on the actual wonder, given how many forests I have and how I can't really invest those worker turns into improving food tiles anyway. New Numids aren't as strong as the C1 terrors that I dealt with in... PB24? If someone comes at me with a Sword/Cat stack (superdeath???) they'll just destroy everything at least. Anyway, like I said, I felt pretty hamstrung into at least picking a Fishing civ. Probably did not need to be Fishing/Mining, but that definitely simmed out to be the fastest start. If I do go for Great Lighthouse (which I'm kind of talking myself into) it's definitely the second fastest route outside of Roosevelt + Fishing/Mining. 6. Mr. Cairo - Willem: Financial: +1 commerce on all non-river tiles that have 2+ commerce. +100% production of Bank. +35% Library. Creative: +2 culture per city. +100% production of Theatre. +35% production of Library, Observatory. China: Agriculture/Mining. UB: Theatre replacement: Pavilion. Available at Aesthetics. UU: Crossbow replacement. Causes Collateral Damage (max 60%), +2 free strikes. Willem and Hannibal are the two leaders that get the coveted +70% production bonus on the Library. At least, until we finally mod in Creative/Charismatic Hitler. Basically allows for 50h libraries for the quick whip/chop. Financial also gets the coastal commerce boost, which is at least nice here, and we can probably expect a lack of rivers on an island heavy map (or at least a lack of Big rivers) meaning a single city can probably only work a couple of riverside cottages anyway. Creative is one of my more favorite traits, the early border pops give you so much flexibility in dotmaps. CKN's are ridiculous on water maps. Pavilion will basically be a non entity. |
