Up Thread to participate in this Epic. There will be no quitters for this
race. Everyone who participates will be revealed as either a tortoise or a hare.
Those who succeed will be honored as tortoises. The rest will go down in infamy
as hares. Do you have what it takes to enter a high stakes race? Scenario
Concept: What would it be like to play Civ3 as a real time strategy game?
We are going to find out. In the classic fable of the tortoise and the hare, the
hare loses the race to the tortoise despite being far more athletically talented.
The goal here will be to win the game using the least amount of real-world playing
time! Scoring:
You must win the game to qualify as a tortoise! Defeated players will be logged
as hares, with special infamy reserved for those who do not complete the game. Play
the World's end game victory screen includes a timer. This timer will be used
to rank the tortoises. Your time will be listed next to your place of honor in
the results. Players who play through to a defeat will be be ranked elite among
hares, sorted by elimination date within the game. Their clock results will also
be listed. Hares who wander off and become lost or who take a nap and sleep through
part of the race, who fail to cross the finish line, will receive one demerit
next to their names and not have their time recorded. Hares who sign up but do
not even bother to show up for the race will receive two demerits, ten lashes
with a wet noodle, and turn into bottom dwellers in the final standing. Settings:

(hook up resources) Strategy:
Managing the conflicting imperatives of speeding up to save time vs slowing down
to perform more successfully should give this Epic a unique flavor! Remember that
automating workers and cities is optional! All the speed in the world won't matter
if you lose the game. If
you are pulled AFK, save the game and exit. You do not want distractions slowing
your results significantly. Most players will be hurrying, so the game should
pass quickly. I am allowing three weeks to give everyone plenty of time to squeeze
this one in. I expect some players to finish in one or two evenings, although
I also expect some to opt for certainty as a tortoise and take more time where
others are rushing through. Do
not sit pondering your strategy after you save the game, only to exit or reload,
erasing time illegitimately off your game clock. You may pause to rethink, but
either on the clock, or having exited from the game. This
map is completely random and untested. I recommend figuring out at least your
first turn from the starting screenshot. After that, you are on your own! Good
luck. Signups
will remain open until Thursday, August 7. You must provide a working email when
you sign up in order to receive the start file, which will not be available for
download so as to prevent any would-be hares from "dipping their toe into
the water" and withdrawing from the race if they do not like the temperature! Closing
Day: Monday, August 11. Reports due on August 11 or 12. Signups
are now open! Post
your name and email before August 7 to participate.
