I opted for a 20000
culture city from the start as the scenario seems to be perfect for this strategy.
I wanted sea access for Thebes to build the Colossus and the Lighthouse. Seeing
coast in the north I thought another lake would be unlikely on a small archipangelo
map. So I moved the settler north and founded Thebes in 3950 BC. After two warriors
and one settler Thebes started on culture and never build anything else again
with very few exceptions like a marketplace. Settler
production was the task of Memphis using the wheat in the southeast. This would
give me a slow start in the expansion department but a great start concerning
culture. My
first wonder was the Colossus in 1500 BC. I choose it instead of the better pyramids
because I wanted my golden age when already in monarchy. In 925 BC Alexander finished
the Oracle and I knew my gamble concerning the Pyramids would succeed. Pyramids
where constructed in 410 BC and triggered my golden age. Using my golden age I
got a one tech lead lasting until the end of the ancient age. I
intended from the start to deny Alexander his golden age. He should not get a
scientific and a commercial wonder and should never win a fight against me with
a Hoplite. While the former should be (and was) not difficult, the latter needed
some careful planing. The key to denying the Hoplite victory was setting up an
army of elite swordsmen. So I needed a leader and at least 3 elite swordsmen.
Careful handling of my barbarians provided a couple of elite swordsmen at the
cost of loosing an serious amount of vet swordsmen to barbarian horsemen. After
Alexander declared war in 130 AD. I gave him several opportunities attacking these
elite swordsmen with his archers and got the desired leader after my fourth victory.
Formed an army and attacked with the support of up several catapults. My other
elite swordsmen surviving the archer attacks and not needed for the army provided
2 more leaders while killing some Greek archers. I never attacked a Hoplite with
anything but the army. I never attacked a four hit point Hoplite and only rarely
one with 3 hit points. Consequently I won all my fights against Hoplites as intended. It
was clear to me, that I needed see superiority for my above outlined plan. Otherwise
the pure number of Hoplites would be too much for my single army to handle. So
I build lots of galleys. I attacked every incoming see vessel with a group of
4 vet galleys after I commanded a critical mass of 12. My see combat results averaged
out in the long run and I was able to get the desired see superiority about 800
AD. After this time Alexander never set foot on any of my islands and I slowly
began taking his towns on outside islands. I
kept our war up until I took over resp. settled the three larger islands on the
map and the 3 tiny islands to the south of my starting continent. This would not
trigger a domination victory and would deny Alex most resources. I
was in monarchy while Greeks where in republic during the war. This might be a
mistake from my part as Alex got a slight tech lead. Fortunately he never had
the resources for knights. I still have to check the exact values for war weariness.
Maybe anyone could provide a link? 1295
AD I achieved all my goals, made peace and switched to republic. The game became
eventless soon. I got the tech lead in the early industrial age and was never
endangered again. Alex even offered a mutual protection pact to me. Game ended
in 1910 AD with the desired cultural victory.
