Here's the real question: Why did they think that it was such a good idea to sign such long NAPs with him at all?
Seriously, just ONE border neighbor NOT signing a NAP, even if you're not going to attack...

For a player with no way to win-it, it is certainly frustrating. But I think in that case you play to see what you *can* manage short of winning. Maybe that means mucking around with the big dogs and playing kingmaker, maybe it means drafting in behind the leader to 2nd place on the scoreboard, these are all reasonable things IMO. Each player is different though.
Yes, exactly - positioning as kingmaker, or even acting like a vassal state (not totally sure if this is actually allowed in RB) is entirely a reasonable way to go. This should be more rewarding than simply denying another player an earned victory - at least he has tried.
As to LP's reaction on reading this thread, I suspect he will feel somewhat vindicated. It will be interesting to see everyone's views at that later stage too.
This is better than any TV soap opera! Perhaps there is a new reality TV show in this somewhere... A sort of Civ Idol....

Its a pretty brutal read at the start, but if he makes it through he should see people start to warm to him and appreciate the ability he has shown

I'll weigh in on the side of those saying LP deserves to be in first place. Sure he has an ego, but I think you could say that about a lot of people on this site.
I think I remember early in his thread where he was having trouble hashing out an agreement over email and wanted desperately to arrange a chat. I'm guessing that he's either very persuasive in chat, or he's mastered the tactics of a three-year-old in a grocery store checkout lane ("I want a candy bar! If you loved me, you'd buy me a candy bar! Why can't I have a candy bar? If you don't buy me a candy bar, I'll hate you for ever!").
I think LP should get full credit for basing his farmer's gambit an overall strategy that he used in dealing with all his opponents, while the other players dealt with him on an isolated basis, not considering what it would mean if he could sign NAPs with all his neighbors.
If LP has managed to annoy people to such an extent that they're willing to see anyone else win the game, then that's the flip side of his early diplomatic success.

If it was suggested that Plako sometimes seems not as fully committed to the anti Parkin alliance as he could be, would anyone agree?

No. If anything he's the most committed, from what I've seen.

LP not only managed to get a NAP with all of his neighbors, which is impressive enough, he managed to do it with no army to speak of.
That's what I've always considered impressive. It's easier to get peace deals when the other guy considers your military to be threatening.

Locke's latest post reminds me why I like that guy.
Relatedly, Adlain is totally screwed. Think he'll try to put up any resistance or just quit?

Resistance in the form of mass-printed leaflets decrying the invasion!
