RB has been elitist for a long time. It's a problem caused by the early Pitboss games. Those were the introduction many of our current users had to RB, and all of them included RB'ers calling others (either people from other websites or fellow RB'ers) bad, belittling them, making fun of them and so forth. For anyone joining in, it only seems natural to act as others have before them. It's embedded in our own little "culture" now. Which is a damn shame, I don't approve at all..
Jowy, that is demonstrably false: looking at this thread, and elsewhere, there have been posts that have both commented with approval and encouragement of some players that are new to RB. If people make bad calls though, they will get called on it. No pussyfooting around with that. I think a lot of posters will not congratulate players for making bad calls because that would be both patronising and self defeating. Not giving false praise is not the same thing as elitism.

Only one's closest friend has the right to say something like that about them, only to their face, and only if it will truly benefit them. I hate to say this, because I hate to be in conflict with people I respect, but this kind of conduct is unethical, and needs to stop if you want this site to remain one of the brighter spots on the Internet. Criticize Kuro's - or my or anyone else's - Civ-play as much as you want, but cut the ad hominems. They are useless and demeaning, and reflect poorly on the poster and the site.
Yeah, whether or not Kuro is "stupid," which I refuse to agree with based on our limited information, I think that you are being rather rude to state that you think that he is.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.
1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.
2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.
3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.
4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

Okay guys...the India start of PB2 is not likely to be a good one if emulated by a different civ. That's basically what Kuro is doing and failing miserably with.
I haven't read that in awhile.. sulla didn't pass up farming a corn to chop instead did he?

yeah, ok.. I agree with this. and also a bit embarassed/guilty I wasn't more careful with my own tone. I still remember how furious I was after ww13 ended to see Rowain calling me stupid in the lurker thread, its not a good feeling.
Please don't go. The drones need you. They look up to you.
Everyone does realize there are nine other players in this game, right? I would suggest paying more attention to them and less focus on poor Kuro. It's a greens game, there's going to be a lot of mistakes. We did a lot of dumb stuff in the early Pitboss/PBEM games. Some of the comments went a bit far in this thread.
