You'll also need to buy something to remove your existing thermal paste.
The #1 thing is not to apply too much thermal paste. Look for some computer-building videos.

1) Take Heat Sink off (verify that it actually works).
2) Buy some thermal paste, the white silicon stuff works fine, and is non conductive so it doesn't risk shorting out stuff if you have terrible hand eye coordination.
3) Put a single dab on the heat sink block and on the CPU.
4) Use a old credit card if your thermal paste did not come with a spreader to 'butter' your components
5) Reinstall heatsink
Try to avoid messy with the thing that pops your CPU out. Pretty simple.

Do Core2Quads not throttle back before overheating enough to cause a hard-lock?

I think not, from experience. I'm not sure how effective this fix is going to be though as graphics issues do exist on this PC in addition to those problems. Still if I can get even a few more months out of the PC I should hace a choice out of some new motherboards in an upgrade to Haswell...and the new Samsung 840 Evo are released next month.

I don't think they did.
@Krill, what sort of graphics issues?
1) Screen goes to black and comes back - Driver issue, wipe driver and reinstall
2) Pink/Blue Squares - Bad Memory on the card
3) Screen cuts out and does not come back - Might be heat/overclock failure/power issue
That being said, you can probably buy a gaming machine for late 2000's games for like $500.

Number 2 happens arguably more than a few times per week.
FWIW though, I think this PC has had it. I just opened it up, took the CPU fan off and the motherboard is cracked around the CPU. The CPU fan will not re-attach either, because I think the crack in the motherboard comes from where the fan was mounted.

OK, so...after much closer inspection, cleaning, application of thermal paste, destruction of parts and reattaching of the CPU fan...the temps max out at over 80 degrees Celcius under load. So rather than go and spend £40 on a new fan that may not solve the issues, I'm just going to bite the bullet and build a new PC.
Anyone got an ideas revolving around a Haswell Core i5 (whatever model) and something in the region of an AMD ATI 7790? I only really need the CPU, motherboard, graphics card and RAM, and this is the jist of what I've come up with, buying from 2 websites:
Amazon.co.uk: DDR3 8GB x 2: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008G...ROKL5A1OLE
Motherboard: Asus B85M-G: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00D1...ROKL5A1OLE
Ebuyer.com: CPU: Core i5 4670: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/467637
Graphics card: AMD 7790 1GB http://www.ebuyer.com/490665-his-hd-7790...-h779ft1gd
This will go into my Antec P182 case with Corsair 620W power supply, with 3TB, 1TB and 500GB HDD drives. Plan is to get that Samsung 840 EVO SSD when it comes out (or a 250GB Samsung 840 if they drop the prices).

Yikes, so I made things worse by telling you to pull out the fan and thermal paste...
Anyway, I'm a terminal cheapskate, so I'd get a lower end Haswell, maybe the 4430 at £147 instead of that one at £178, and rationalize that you'd never notice the difference between 3 or 3.4 GHz. And it'll run cooler too. The 7790 also sounds like overkill for League of Legends; not sure what other gaming you do. But I'm an incorrigible miser so don't listen to my opinion too strongly. :P

Eh, the advice was good, I've been waiting for this PC to blow up for years. I probably fucked something up somewhere. The PC still kinda runs, but it's not really that suitable for what I use it for (gaming, and university work, so I need stability). I'm probably going to take out the core components and put them into a spare case...worst case scenario it's a back up PC for a member of my family.
You're right that I don't really need much on the graphics side, the only problem I have is just what to cut it down to. The 7790 is on offer @£100 from my local supplier (I've sourced everything from local suppliers, the slight cost increase is actually better than having to pay for postage), those items plus a CPU cooler (and 4GB RAM sticks*4) comes to about £450 and change.
Now, I could drop the graphics card to...a 7750, and only save £25. I could just drop from the OC graphics card to the normal 7790 and save £10, so I don't really think it's actually that bad...fuck it, ust go with the base 7790, a penny saved is a penny earned...apart from for income tax.
But yeah...just how big a difference would I see from dropping form the 4670 to the 4430? I mean, it's £30. On a £450 build is it really worth skimping on that? I honestly don't know, all I know is that the Q9550 lasted this long, and I'm never going to upgrade a CPU.

Question (because I'm thick): If I use an identical pair of sticks in DIMMs 1 and 2, can I use different pair of sticks in DIMMs 3 and 4? Do different speeds matter on the RAM as well?
