Quote:Because if we both are in race for nationalim and taj, if i loose taj at acoinflip or at 1 turn I still have mercantilism which in my opinion is still a bigger prize then Taj and you dont need to be first to get the bonus.
I would disagree with that philosophy. Suppose you have two paths: one with a first to bonus, the other with a safe always-there bonus. The player who wins the first to should be ahead, then the player who takes it safe and the player who pushed for the first-to and lost should fall behind. I think that makes for more interesting risk vs reward decisions.
I think most first-to civ bonuses already operate that way, but like you say Nationalism in does not. If you lose the Taj race you still probably ended up taking the best peaceful tech route, at least if you get a free revolt for Merc. That means for whoever wins the Taj, Nationalism is a super valuable tech and I don't think any other techs in the same era even come close. I was entertaining all sorts of crazy plans in pb31 to build it but you were just too fast.

Well i wasnt taalking about the most interisting risk vs reward decision there,i was saying is realy worth path(no brain) even you loose the race.So in this case Taj comes just like a bonus not tha main thing.ANd as i sai in 3.04 you have a realy powerfull civic at banking as well, and even more you can be there few turns earlier giving benefit earlier and giving you a powerfull unit like knight. So i wouldnt say in 3.0.4 the decision is no brain, if you have mines and cotages emancipation would be way stronger then
mercantilism withot the mids for example.

Nationalism with Merc, Nationhood, Taj and on a line to Cuirs/Cav has too much. Fair point.

Taotao has research visibility on DZ's lands. It is interesting that he (apparently) did not attempt to get city visibility via EP spending, particularly since REM had units in English territory in the last round of fighting. Looks like he's caught unprepared here. Could be devastating.

I think he does have visibility:

I’ve tried to check the map for REM units, both staring into my almost fully-uncovered-by-espionage Donovan-land and doing some airship sweeps. Still, the units have avoided my gaze.
But it sounds like he may not have been looking at the gaps in it closely enough, or maybe not under DZ's units. Either way, I agree it doesn't look promising right now.

Ah, missed that sentence. Good catch. In that case, I wonder if taotao uses F5 to check for visible enemy units? When there are so many units on the board it is easy to miss things unless you use the game's interface well. With F5, units are flashing in your face for every tile with visibility so that's an easy way to avoid a potential catastrophe with missing units. As long as you're keeping good vision with your borders you'll be safe. With airships this should be easy enough to manage.

Yeah, F5 after the Airships was how I was checking in PB 33, but we didn't have the luxury of EP visibility; it's possible that Taotao was less thorough with Airship coverage because he did.
It's also possible that REM only recently moved the troops down there - I think he mentioned that Donovan was repositioning troops and wondered if that was a reaction to his movements up to the border.
Hopefully they'll both continue to report; this feels like the climactic battle.

It's very possible that REM might have actually assumed that taotao was relying on EP coverage of Donovan and then hid in the little hidden gaps between cities. The visibility you get is like as if you have a unit on each city tile, meaning it'll only be 1-tile radius for a flatland city and a BFC for a hilltop city. Very clever of him if this is the case...

Sorry all.
No-one seems to have reacted to this; does that mean the game is dead?

Wait, this game isn't dead?
Just checked civstats, there hasn't been a new turn since Aug.27...
