You need to do a repair install, your computer was probably old enough that it didn't use AHCI. That an you probably have to reinstall windows either way.

ASM you are a fucking genius. That was the exact problem.
EDIT: Quick boot into Bios to change that setting and it boots to desktop fine.

Ah good, you only had the one intel driver issue. I've fixed it like 4 times and XP requires a repair install.

Loving the new xps here
It feels like a new computer should, able to run Photoshop cs5 with all the components and still feels snappy. Definitely enjoying much faster loads and saves on huge files. It's about 4" shorter sitting next to the old one, but best of all it came with a slide out drink holder on the front and a lighted snack tray on the top.

That cup of coffee should probably not be that close to the computer...
I recently upgraded to a 4670 as well and the old Windows installation had massive trouble working even after some repair and rollbacks. I think it's best to just reinstall Windows if you change motherboards.

Heh, that cup holder is the blu ray drive and the snack tray is just more i/o ports slightly indented for easier access ;p
I just couldn't resist having some fun.
I am really drooling all over the new google nexus 7 due to be available in Canada on the 31st. It is almost a sure buy for me as I have been wanting a tablet for years but have been holding out for principle sake. I just can't buy into the rip-off pricing structure of these mobile devices (like not putting in a card reader but will sell you 16 gb storage for +$100) , but now the price performance is quite reasonable with the new nexus. Compare it to the Apple mini and you will see what I mean by reasonable.
1,920 x 1,200 display and 323 ppi, WOW! Exactly what I need for a mobile portfolio

The 'proper' way of doing that is to find the intel drivers locations and manually remove them in command line.

I'll buy that... except I would have that as a all-in-one and put a monitor on the side of the box, tho it might not make a good gaming machine for dem excitable gamers.

Update...because my luck isn't that great at the moment. I run a dual monitor set up, and when I came back home yesterday one of the monitors wouldn't work. Fiddled about a bit, the cables were fine, and so were both monitors, just could only run them one at a time, best I could get was that one of hte monitors wouldn't be recognised, but I could force it to work but not at a natural resolution (1440*900).
Turns out, graphics card is broken...and I can't get the on-board graphics to function to an acceptable level in a dual monitor set up either. So it's looking like I'm going to have to splurge on a new graphics card as well
