Heard much about the Cult of the Dragon? I think powerful and sinister followers flocking to worship and protect Acheron is very much in flavour.
I think the only really bad idea is making them Archmage level casters.
If Acheron had a pile of fireball slingers in his city, then they would still accomplish the goal of dissuading anyone from coming too near the city and making the capture a more important military enterprise, without the same level of game smashing if someone gets hold of them.

The clan plan:
Early Archmages are really powerful, but the Amurites can shut them down. So the Clan is attempting to cripple the Amurites with their other For the Horde units, while working on getting the Archmages to the mainland.
I don't think their plan is going to work out quite right. They're scared of the Amurite worldspell, but their attack plan is just a choke. It doesn't negate the worldspell at all, and in fact gives the Amurites a perfect motive to use it against them just to help somebody else.
The best outcome of this would be locking the Amurites into a treaty of some sort. Anyone think this is likely?

It seems rather foolish to plan for Sareln acquiescing to anything short of violent death, considering what happened in PBEM1. :neenernee

No. They damage every unit (hostile, friendly or neutral) on adjacent tiles but not the tile the unit started on.
Like this:
ddd
dsd
ddd
"s" is the tile the PZ attacks from. Units on this tile take no splash damage.
"d" tiles take splash damage if the zombie dies
Note that if there is a neutral unit on one of the "d" tiles it results in an automatic DOW when that unit takes splash damage.

Iskender seems to be in a pretty good position right now, and will probably get the time to get the Sidar shenanigans going. Looking forward to it.

Well his plans to get high XP units are largely predicated in XP deals with other nations. The natural maturation period for non-spiritual, non-charismatic, non-AV priests without much starting experience is probably going to take well over a hundred turns.
He needs his neighbours to get themselves out from danger before he gets a large influx of Shades.

It's looking that way.
9 PZ's are pretty much unstoppable at this point in the game.

It's a real pity though because he put so much effort into making himself a tough target. I was impressed by his unorthodox early play, and how he turned a normally fragile civ into quite a powerhouse... but even with all that blood and treasure poured into early golems he is still going to be rolled over.
Sometimes things are just unfair.
