The diplo in this game is stupid. First of all you have LP that appears to be backstabbing Plako by not telling Plako when they still have that secret ally deal in place, and then you have rego agreeing to an NAP with no OB which he needs, and then you have mackoti/Ioan considering breaking an NAP to hit Luddite.
Frankly, are there any trustworthy players in this game?

I'm still rooting for Plako and SleepingMoogle. When I saw Krill's question I immediately thought of those two and I scrolled down to see that others thought of the same two. Shows how crazy diplo has been in this game.

HI guys, I am new to MP. I am finding this discussion really interesting but find myself intrigued, so please forgive my questions.
What do you mean by trustworthy, in this context?? Is it realistic to expect players to be totally trustworthy?
Isn't effective diplomacy the ability to persuade and manipulate others to achieve your goals, without upsetting other players, at least too much? People appear to be doing things at their own will and are not being forced to do things which they otherwise might not want to do. I am trying to understand.
What about bending the truth / being economical with the truth - without actually lying...? Does this fall foul of being trustworthy?
Thanks

Of course the players can't be 100% honest all the time in diplomacy, but several of them have been acting pretty scummy. Only a few have really shown a high degree of integrity thus far.

The Countdown:
T148 (2 turns): Mausoleum + Shrine + Islam
T149 (3 turns): Parthenon + Sankore
Assuming no major wonder sniping happens in the next couple of turns, it looks like we'll be doing rather well for ourselves very shortly.
If all this goes according to his plan... The other players might decide LP is the true "runaway."

That is because he clearly is, and I am fascinated that no one has done anything about it.
As for honest diplo, in a one off situation, maybe doing everything possible is ideal. You have to remember that this is a community and most us plan to play more than one game. You might be able to get away with being a bastard once, but after that ...
Look at Mackoti. No one will ever trust him here again.

Diplomacy is basically a prisoner's dilemma. It's better to defect if you aren't planning to play any further iterations, but if you are, cooperating is the better idea.

I beg to differ. Reading all the games I get the impression that you can lie or twist the truth as much as you want to get concessions from someone. As long as you are good in English and can make it sound funny nobody holds that against you most of the time and players still trust you in the next game. Look at rego for example. Does anyone really think that people won't trust him in the next game just because he tries to stir something against plako and does tell him they are friends at the same time? I am not even sure what some people here expect him to do: Tell plako that he wants to attack him? Or not talk with him at all, giving his intentions away as well? Though I probably shouldn't get in that discussion...

No you can't Serdoa, and that is why no one trusts you either. We don't trust rego either though you do make a fair point about the language.
