Why in the world would we settle on that blue dot? 1N of it gives up absolutely nothing important and at least pulls in a couple more forests, and that's if a better site doesn't appear farther up the coast.

I agree that it's too early to start making Great Lighthouse plans, before we know if there's enough coast to make it worthwhile. I wouldn't worry about finding trade route partners though, with this many teams around we'll find somebody.

Because a) desert is a useless tile, and b) you can catch the lake that way.

For what it's worth in considering GLH, the map is 35% water.

I think the bigger risk in settling blue dot isn't that GLH isn't worthwhile (with 35% water I think it almost certainly will be) but that the water we see there is not large enough to build a lighthouse on.

Any saltwater is automatically large enough to build a lighthouse on.

Do we know its saltwater yet?

We already see >10 tiles of water, hence it's saltwater.

Whether it's saltwater big enough to build military ships on, is yet to be determined.

which will also be evident from tile yields and the irrigation status of neighbouring tiles.

Yeah I mean I'm not disputing that Red is better than Blue. The only reason we would ever settle Blue first would be if we wanted to get the GLH. I know its early and we haven't really explored enough to see if GLH is even worthwhile, but its a wonder we had started the game considering and I think its worth discussing this possibility in case we find more water and do want to take a serious bid at it. Besides we don't have much else to discuss.

Any settling plans to the north west need more tile revealed in that area. The current blue spot is ... not that nice. And settling it before revealing at least three more layers of fog in that area would be foolish.
I think we can safely hold back on any discussion for 3rd city until at least copper is revealed.

Blue is perfectly fine as a hammer city, of course it's not a commerce city. Don't knock it til you've tried it.

Something we should consider: using some of those 8 forests near the grass pigs in some kind of wonder. Any city there would be production-focused, due to the lack of rivers. So Mausoleum? But that's another thought for the future.
