Thread that quality, it's worth a little dead kitten. Kyan's thread, there, shows I think why Sum/puppets is cruel even to the summoner, not just the victims.
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.

I know. I was the poor bastard that figured out how to do it, did it, then had Kyan play a turn and fuck up all the node micro leaving me with no way to get a metamagic node. Then Dave ran over everyone with strength 3 spectres and Gaspar got mad.

The Top Ten Tips thread at CivFanatics is one level more advanced than this, but it has a lot of good advice and some basic explanations of a lot of game concepts.

Gaspars VII thread is too long (IMO), Kyan/Krill/DaveV is much more concise. (Paticularly for entertainment value, with Krill ripping into Kyan + the beautiful math for a Water III summoner/puppeter/ToE roflstomp (which didn't happen, but would've been epi i it did)).

I also see a lot of bad advice...a lot of it is "cool stuff to do when you're twiddling around in an easy single player game."

I'll second the recommendation of Sullla's walk through. It is slightly dated in places due to later patches and the expansions, but it gives a solid introduction to the major systems and mechanics of the game. The other game reports on Sullla's site are also worth a read, especially the earlier ones. Later reports tend to focus on more specialized aspects of the game and variant themes, as people had been playing the game for some time by then.

The war college at CivFanatics has a ton of useful material, but a lot of it is more advanced/specialized and will likely not be as useful to a new player. If and when you become interested in the nitty-gritty details of particular subsystems, though, this is a great place to go.

Do make use of the civilopedia in game -- lots of great info there on all the basics of the game, what is what and what does what, etc.

Good luck! It is a great game, and I hope you get as much fun out of it as most of us lurking here at RB have.

If you focus on the early game, I do think we did about as thorough a walkthrough of the FFH systems as you'll find anywhere on the internet. Later on it was more bitching and complaining. I haven't read Krill/Kyan/Dave's thread, because dead baby kittens, but I'm sure its more out and out amusing.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

Sullla actually has a video series too. The Willem playthrough I believe. That's more recent and could be a good way to learn. I haven't watched any of it past the first video, but I remember it being very informative and explanatory.
