[SPOILERS] Krill smokes some weed - PBEM50

Specifically, I think any civ that starts Hunting has to make up for it with the second tech. Myst is as I've said worthless for me and Mining as second tech means with 100% certainty researching Agri or AH first, but I sersiously dislike Sury on these settings: There is no real early game advantage from getting more cities down sooner it's all about getting them productive.

Well, turf that one in the bin as well, the only difference to my last game is I would have PHI rather than SPI.

It's one option, but TBH I kinda prefer choosing Caesar of Vikings. I think I prefer IMP to CHM. Depends on start though. The more likely I am to get an early settler (like size two or double slave at size 4) the stronger I think Julius becomes. It could be a decent combo IMO, but I'm also partial to De Gaulle if I can get Henge cheaply, and a good size 7 capital to just hand build everything I need and not rely on a granary at the capital.

Quote:
  • Alexander (Agg, Phi) of China (Agriculture, Mining) - Hate PHI/AGG, too slow and doubtful mid game benefits
  • Genghis Khan (Agg, Imp) of France (Agriculture, The Wheel) - Prefer IND over AGG
  • Asoka (Org, Spi) of Netherlands (Agriculture, Fishing)
  • Augustus (Imp, Ind) of Babylon (Agriculture, The Wheel)
  • Louis XIV (Cre, Ind) of Persia (Agriculture, Hunting)

  • Napoleon (Cha, Org) of Rome (Fishing, Mining)
  • Charles de Gaulle (Ind, Cha) of England (Fishing, Mining)
  • Julius Caesar (Imp, Org) of Viking (Hunting, Fishing)
  • Justinian (Spi, Imp) of Spain (Fishing, Mysticism) - Not going to shrine a religion for a while

  • Zara Yaqob (Cre, Org) of Celts (Hunting, Mysticism)
  • Suryavarman (Exp, Cre) of Germany (Hunting, Mining)
  • Lincoln (Chm/PHI) of Aztec (Hunting, Mysticism)

This leaves:

  1. Augustus (Imp, Ind) of Babylon (Agriculture, The Wheel)
  2. Louis XIV (Cre, Ind) of Persia (Agriculture, Hunting)
  3. Asoka (Org, Spi) of Netherlands (Agriculture, Fishing)
  4. Napoleon (Cha, Org) of Rome (Fishing, Mining)
  5. Charles de Gaulle (Ind, Cha) of England (Fishing, Mining)
  6. Julius Caesar (Imp, Org) of Viking (Hunting, Fishing)

Basically, if I see a 5F seafood once I get the starting screenshot, I discard the first 2 choices. If I don't see that I discard the last 3 choices. After that it's a bit too situational to create a simple picking algorithm.

Not sure I follow your thinking - isn't exp all about making cities productive quicker?

Problem is toroidal. It's not that big a map so the cost of settling even a third city is prohibitive. I don't want to be spamming out settlers unsupported, and the problem Sury has is that whilst he only needs a granary to make the cities productive, he also needs to grow the population and then work good commerce tiles (or specialists etc but that means shelling out for a library). Early game cottages aren't that effective unless you can literally cottage every single tile and keep a city lead on everyone else, so eventually you get a better BPT and can overtake the tech leader. The issue is that on this map, I start no more than 18 tiles from every other player so I will not have the time to get the cottages to mature.

I need to focus more on getting the necessary tech to keep myself safe: I can't be too far behind anyone to cats, for example, or HA or knights. yes I could defend against tech superior units with masses of ancient era crap, but that costs a surprising amount of gold and generally means that I'm not going to be able research as well because I have to slave out the ancient era crap. If you look at the 6 leaders I've selected, 3 are ORG, Louis is aiming at the Mids for Rep, and de Gaulle is looking at an early Henge for extra happiness in every city so the cities can work more tiles and be more productive (basically double the cottages in the early per city than Sury). Augustus is the odd one out but the aim there is to try and contend with Mids and/or Henge by having ideal starting techs and getting a worker out quicker than the others.

Actually, the extension for Augustus is that Babylon is supposed to cram a few bowmen down someones neck to settle contested land. It's a bit more flexible but TBH I don't really think it does that much better than Sury of Germany, though Sury obviously has to deal with the much worse starting techs.

One of the main reasons for taking an IMP leader is if you can see a reasonable location for city 2 from the starting screenshot: get the settler after a single worker, share a food resource to grow to size 2 and slave out a worker. It can work surprisingly well for certain starts.

So would you have preferred last pick or last in turn order?

Don't care TBH. Probably last in turn order though, cos I would like a decent choice of leaders.
