So just for my own knowledge, how many hours from now would you be looking to start?

I put my kid down for bedtime at 8 PM, so a bit over four hours from now. But I'm going to leave the server up all weekend so if playing times are better tomorrow, that's OK too. And if no one else shows up for a start tonight, well, we would either have a smaller game tonight or start tomorrow sometime, doesn't really matter to me. Whatever people are up for. Low stress, have fun, play games.

So how does this work? If players can jump in and out, is this more of an informal kind of game?

It's absolutely informal. Simultaneous turns, concurrent logins (hence the smaller number of civs -- last week's charlie foxtrot verified again that the peer to peer nature of the multiplayer networking code isn't up to a big simultaneous game, we tried and failed spectacularly). Stay and play as long as you feel like it and then resign (ALT+Q) to AI control. If someone else wants to join in they can take over. No passwords on your civ, that kind of thing. Last week we were in the MP chatroom (link is somewhere above in this thread) and that worked while trying to coordinate things. But I can set up Civstats easily too. I set the turn limit as low as possible, to 1 hour, but if people are simultaneously logged in the turns should go very quickly, fast enough to play through the game I hope.

I wouldn't expect to finish the game tonight. When everyone has had enough, last guy out pauses it and we can reconvene tomorrow, or whenever.

I had plans but they may get cancelled, so in that case I'd give this a shot.

Pity there isn't a European host so we could start a game much earlier and see if we could keep them going through the entire weekend.

Anyone who controls their own network equipment can set it up, only took me about an hour or two last weekend to do it. It probably helps that I do IT for a living though, but it isn't that hard to get a functioning setup if you have a good Internet connection to work with.
