Thecla Wrote:On the other hand, I found a couple of the Borderlands missions in the starting areas (as afar as I got so far) on normal difficulty (I guess there's only one difficulty lvl?) more challenging than anything so far in Torchlight on the "very hard" setting. Once my very hard diff bowie got a good damage gun playing up to Level 10 of the Main Story turned out to be a nice walk. Beyond that more caution gets required because those critter really hit hard!
IMO the Main Story seems pretty good balanced. The monsters there are about the same lvl as your char or at least very close. BUT beware when you enter Phase Portals (opens by the death of a certain monster) or Portals created from buyable (treasure?) maps: the critters there can be several levels above yours!
Beside that I got the impression that the difficulty setting has an influence on the loot you came along. My normal diff bowie did by far not come up with the stuff of the very hard one.
Out of curiousity: where have you found the Screenshot key in Torchlight? The manual is silent here...
-> I found it! The screenshot goes to the clipboard, not into a file as D2 screenshots.

EDIT
In case you also want a custom control layout:
- Locate and enter the folder named as your windows user in the Settings and Documents Folder
- Go down the folders Applicationdata -> runic games -> torchlight
- Edit the settings.txt file as you like
Be sure to make a backup copy before you start

Torchlight patch 1.12 is out and fixed a lot of issues. For me the most notable is that now the Shadow Vault, an infinite dungeon you get access to after you completed the game once, stays available to all characters, even new ones.
I'm curious how far my new Destroyer can go down there Ironman style. Leveling up there seems faster then in the regular dungeon. He's now clvl 12(.5) at the entrance of Vault floor 7.
oh btw ..
The battle to complete Torchlight takes place on floor 35 and is something to take note of! Expect it to last 10+ minutes, even with massiv enchantment buffed gear, so pack up a good bunch of pots. Up to now i was not able to complete this battle without dying at least once with a very hard vanquisher (ouch!) and a hard alchemist (fair).
Thecla i wish your very hard hardcore vanquisher all the luck she can get down there at floor 35.

Yesterday i tried D2 again after some intense Torchlight adventures. In short terms: it felt real sluggy by both movement and interface.
Torchlight got me so used to it's Hotkey system that reverting back to the classic LMB/RMB + F-Key combo (which btw also works in Torchlight) made me feel like having an arm removed or trying to write with the wrong hand. Guess i need to re-train a bit

Going between games is tough for me. After all the time I spent in HG:L, where the F key was used to pick up objects and the E key was a spell key, I found myself quite frustrated in Borderlands, where the E key picks things up, heals others, opens doors, etc. and the F key deploys your skill (which has a long cool down at the lower levels).

I think most of us suffer the wrong-key-acclimatising syndrom at one point or another...
I've had a few oddball moments in Borderlands myself.
1.) Thinking I need to fish out the Translocator to get up onto a roof (Unreal Tournament teleportation device).
2.) "C" to target (Guild Wars). Woops, my character just dropped into a crouch.
3.) Let's see who's online! "G" and "N" (Guild Wars guild and friends list keys). Woops, I just threw a grenade away.
4.) Hold down CTRL and ALT to see what all the junk on the ground is (Guild Wars highlight, similar to Diablo II highlight) and get momentarily puzzled when nothing happens.
5.) Left pinky stab down to jump some low hurdle (Unreal Tournament) and find my character runs into the object instead.
It's all good fun.

Oh the problem was not mixing up different key layouts, since i pretty soon "matched" the Torchlight key layout to the Diablo layout. It was the absence of the direct hit-and-activate hotkeys! It really makes a big difference when you
either
- hit an F-key to switch to a RMB-only skill, then hit RMB itself to cast the spell, hit the next F-key for the next skill to select and activate via RMB and so one
or
- hit several number keys to activate all wanted skills directly while the RMB skill does not change.
You can go with the classic D1/D2 controls in Torchlight which i did at first, but i found that it soon slows you down a lot. When it comes to activate (at least) non-targeted spells like buffs, auras, fish and so on the hotkeys massively cut down the numbers of keys pressed/clicked in the midst of battle. That's really needed because Torchlight critters get buffed up permanently in dmg, life, speed and skills. At game start critter speed is like D2 normal diff but at the end of the main story their speed has reach hell a4+ level!
The only thing in the Torchlight controls i found rather useless (or close to) is the option to switch to your alternate RMB skill. That's like an extra weapon switch key for your RMB. When it comes to switch RMB skills you're better of using F-keys as usual.

One thing I wish I get the hang of is the use of the scroll wheel. It is much more useful than using the keys, especially in games such as Borderlands where you can choose between 4 weapons and Diablo for skill selection. My problem is I can't switch from the heavy pounding of the mouse buttons to the fine touch of the wheel in a panic. Scrolling pass the wanted weapon and instantly knowing if it was scroll up or down to get what I want has always been a big problem.

I would LOVE for Torchlight to be responsive. As it is, it's a serious hindrance to my enjoyment of the game.
Let me explain:
When I press a key, I expect the computer to respond to said key press IMMEDIATELY. In Torchlight, when I press a key... nothing happens. When I press and HOLD said key, eventually it activates, and I am then free to go about doing whatever else it was I wanted to do. This makes the entire game VERY tedious.
To say nothing of the other (albeit minor) niggling issues that drag the game down further.
Has anyone else experienced this, or am I just that lucky?

Has anyone else experienced this, or am I just that lucky? Aye there are times the hotkeys don't activate the assigned skill/item/function right away when i do a quick tab on them. Most of the times i've observed this my char was either still busy completing the last LMB/RMB or previous hotkey press or he was defending himself vs. attackers (blocking, hit recovery, etc.) in the heat of battle.
Now keeping a key pressed for a brief moment pretty much equals things so i can't really complain here. Maybe i'm kinda used to have a slight lag issue due to playing on USWest for years
Out of curiosity, which "other niggling issues"?
