dtay is a patriots fan. Do you live close to Boston?
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

If you aren't from New England and you are are a Patriots fan, you are definitely going to hell. Come to think of it, even if you are from New England you are going to hell.

Will you confirm if this is a mirrored map or not. You can do that, because imo what I'm asking is if you are following the directions provided or not. If you aren't, I feel that you should tell all the players immediately because you are not doing what was asked, and we should have the opportunity to discard this map and find a mapmaker that will do what is asked.
The starts are mirrored, the rest of the map will not be. That's *my* definition of bog-standard, the best balance I've found between equality and interest. Evidently your definition is different. In my view, the mapmaker should make sure not to be the focus of the game: no one should win or lose as a result of the map, and interesting features should mostly come from the other players, not the map.
If you would rather have Taotao (or another volunteer) do the map, I'm fine with that. I don't have any inherent attachment to mapmaking, just want to see the game go forward.
Going to pause work on the map until a decision is made.

Thank you for posting this here Mardoc. I know that know is never the best time for this discussion, but unfortunately "now" is better than "later".
My views are simple: I was expecting there to be none identical but balanced starts, and the rest of the map to be along the lines of a pangaea in the middle of the map, islands around it, and wrapping on all sides of the map; the central continent did not need to roll over a map edge. I accept that this may not be how most people would view this, however I would argue that mirrored starts are not "bog standard" at RB given the number of games we've played that have not have them, especially over the past 3-4 years.
My second issue is this: originally when we discussed the set up requirements, you raised issues about the visible 9*9 block around the starting tile, and agreed that this area would be made visible to lurkers to check it was balanced in such a way that moving the starting settler was not going to lead to a stronger start. Please forgive me for wanting assurances that this 9*9 block is not also identical between players. When you say the rest of the map is not mirrored (or has reflected or rotational symmetry etc), I feel uncertain given this previous discussion.
My apologies to the other players, but I would much rather this get sorted now when I or others can back out with no real issues.

The 9x9 areas are currently mirrored, but I'm happy to modify them to destroy that symmetry in the final map (was already leaning that direction anyway). It would be one more aspect to double-check to be sure I don't inadvertently create a movement opportunity, but that should be straightforward.
I am not willing to make a 9-player Pangaea map; I can't see any way to make an interesting landform and still meet the other constraints. I had something more like a Lakes map in mind, although it would be hand-drawn.
If you want something that artificial, I would use the Donut script and make a few minimal changes to what the script produces. Might need to start over with new starting screenshots in that case, because it's probably impossible to have both 11+ tiles of separation and a non-coastal start without making it much bigger than 150 tiles/person.

Who, me? I was born and went to college there, but haven't lived there since last century. The Patriots bandwagon formed in 1993 from my view; I actually lived in Boston that year (when Parcells was hired).

We are fine with the starts as they are and would prefer to get going than re-do the map.

If there happens to be a vote here, I agree with this.
