The shrine city was the worst gift IMO. Simply because of the timing, with scooter being ready to capture it the following turn. There is precedent against that kind of gifting so much that people haven't felt the need to explicitly state it as a ban.
Changing topics, how about some props for 2metra? Not only has he done a great job but the show of understanding the game from WilliamLP's perspective and offering a peace treaty was quite sporting by him. Looking forward to what he does against FinHarry, though his options may be limited there.

came to say this! VERY good post on tactics and meta, which William would do well to read later.

I had read some back in the Ichabod's thread and saw it was mutual untrust and fear and Ichabod's ambition which lead to this war between them two. So I secretly was sympathizing with WLP for him having the balls to come after supposedly stronger enemy to revenge being bullied and actually succeeding. So instead of slaughtering his surrounded army and razing his border cities on the northern front bathing in the blood of my nation bitter enemies, I offered WLP 10 turns peace in exchange of my last occupied by him city. Next turn he must had declined the offer (again wanting to see how the situation look and what I did), then he quickly realised the dire situation he was and the generosity (I hope) of my proposal, so he re-sent the same offer. Heh, actually, now I remember I asked for 1 piece of gold as symbolic tribute to mark who won the war, where he either forgot, or did not wanted to give this 1 coin to not agree with me being the victor in the war. Anyway. I took the peace with light heart. Now to Finharry.

Thing is, it wasn't a gift, it was explicitly a peace treaty. Which is what makes the whole argument moot, really, trying to says some city trades were worse than others when they all had explicit reasons for them. The timing for the capture is honestly no different to moving units out of cities (like we discussed earlier about PB15).
I think further discussion about what makes the trades acceptable or not is fine FWIW, but I don't think we've seen the point in this game where there has been a single one that is a straightforward "wrong and unacceptable" move. Or rather if we have seen 1 we've seen at least half a dozen.

Best to just ban the trading of cities in future games It's an easy thing to do. Problem with having gentleman's rules on city trading is that people have a different idea on what kind of a city trade is fair. As seen by TBS thinking that his trade with mackoti was good value, and we know it was made with no malicious intention, but another player thought the price for the cities was not high enough and that it was gifting rather than a fair trade.

It's comforting how little changes. Sullla still writing profusely about this and that. Krill still pissing and moaning profusely about this and that while throwing Darrell under various and sundry buses. Mack still mangling English in the most delightful ways while romping around like Godzilla through other people's civs. Jowy complaining about how much he hates it here but still posting constantly. And on...
Agreed with you there.. I came back just to play one more game, because I did not think RB would be around much longer with Civ4 winding down.. Yet, here we are

To set the record straight ... I'm pretty sure the deal between me and suttree was the first city trade of the game.
I understand why people can get annoyed at city gifting, but I think the 'don't be a dick' rule is enough to regulate it for me. As Krill says, you can get the same effect by just leaving a city empty. The only problem occurs when you gift a city that is currently under threat to a third party IMO, other situations all seem reasonable to me so long as everyone acts in their best interests. Not that I really mind banning it either though.

The problem with the don't be a dick rule is that when people break it, like Nakor's sorry excuse for a defense, there is no penalty.

It's obviously not a rule, but an attitude you expect everybody to have coming into the game. Judging by the results of previous games it works better than a stringent ruleset with penalties attached.
And I'm not sure it's really fair to classify Nakor's defense as having broken the spirit of that idea, he clearly wasn't doing it to spite anyone. I like plako's philosophy of just playing the game as it lies, everyone will get neighbours with different characteristics, it's unavoidable in a game this size that some people will draw an easier hand, just play the situation you're in.
