Hi,

Hooray for peer pressure! toast

I've noticed you used the same mechanism for resizing your screenshots like Speaker did, namely HTML width/height tags. Unfortunately, the pics turn out rather unclear and unreadable this way (and still the browser has to load the picture in its original size!).

As a fanatical report reader, I hereby humbly request that you use an image processing software for shrinking the pictures of your first full report (Epic 1?)... wink

Kylerean,

I'd be happy to do so. In fact, I experimented with ways of doing it. Unfortunately, the host I chose (geocities) seems to think it should be in charge of the size of pictures. I have no control over it. Manually shrinking them (in Paint -- sorry, I have NO good image processing software) leads to something at least as bad, if not worse. PLUS, geocities then resizes it AGAIN, making the exercise feel rather pointless.

If you have more concrete suggestions for a poor graphics guy like myself, I'd be happy to hear them. If that means finding a new host, I'd probably be willing, as I already had the yahoo account stuff. But I am rather particular about "free". I'd gotten as far as noticing the problem but have been unable to correct it. Lots of possibilities here -- from I missed how to override the geocities default (though I did look some) to it's impossible to I should trim really carefully to .... But that's not where my savvy lies.

Care to help an old adventurer who remembers you from 2 different platforms (C-64 and IMB PC)?

A good start!

One request from all the web masters out there, tho, when linking to the RB, link to our reception areas unless there's a specific need to use a direct link (to a post, for example). You can link to the RB Front Door, RBCiv, or the Front Door to the forums.

It's better for the RB community smile

Thanks smile

Link changed. Thanks for the pointer, KoP.

But, I've exceeded my data transfer amount -- probably all those big pictures Kylerean was mentioning. Maybe I do need to find another site. Wonder if that one Sirp set up long ago is still functioning...or if I still can access it...

Thanks everyone for including me in your sites! I've added everyone's link to mine and I've also added two more short reports for some of my personal games.

That's...just silly. eek

Try irfanview, which has a nice resize algorithm. Text remains readable, at least if you shrink the pictures to no less than 60% or so. It can crop selections, too, and even has batch processing if you want to resize all your 128 screenies for your Epic 1 report at once. tongue It cannot do complex editing, though.

I know of some free webspace providers (even with no ads) that offer about 25-50MB of webspace. I'm not sure about bandwidth limits though; and registration is in German. If you won't find free webspace, I could try to register some for you there.

So, irfanview, recommended by Kylerean, is simple enough for even me to understand, at least sorta. It seems to do a nice job of scaling images in a friendly way. I found I had to go down to 70% size to convince geocities not to muck with it even more. But it's still reasonably clear at that level, plus it saved me a fair bit of space. Should make the site stay up more and give people without broadband fewer fits.

I also found a place to go in and edit the html directly in geocities. But they hid it fairly deeply. I might do that, but I think the smaller pictures are OK for a start. Ich muss nicht eine Deutsche Site benutzen. Ich glaube dass ich es lesen koentte. Aber es werden schwer sein. Or something like that. It's been years since I've had to do more than read German. But I still can, more or less.

Thanks to all who helped!

Well I've registered my own domain last weekend and will be hosting my website there shortly. The basic lay-out and structure of the website is ready, now I just need to start adding contents. lol As I'm making my site completely in a text editor it's taking some time, but I'll definitely host the Epic reports there, so try to finish that section of the site asap.
I will host pictures of Ireland there but also host a Civ 4 site with reports and stories about my games. Of course I'll be putting links up to all the sites in this thread as well.
Anyway...here's the link to my site: http://www.dgerards.net/ thumbsup
