Politics Discussion Thread (Heated Arguing Warning)

And, this thread was really just intended to have a little fun at the expense of our UK brothers. I'm the last person that can complain about thread jacking, but I am pretty impressed how far afield we've wandered.

Talking of having a little fun at the expense of the UK, I just watched a selection of US late-night humour on the Brexit -- John Oliver, Samantha Bee and Colbert -- totally blown away. Samantha Bee actually suggested that a major problem is that apparently the UK voters just didn't take the issue seriously, and voted for a laugh.

Samantha Bee actually suggested that a major problem is that apparently the UK voters just didn't take the issue seriously, and voted for a laugh. Which is not a ridiculous statement, considering all the leave voter reactions recorded the day after the vote. A lot of "if I had known the leave had a chance I'd have voted differently" etc... In minor elections people tend to vote "for a laugh", and to make a statement about what they think of those in power. And some UK voters definitely treated the referendum like they would a minor election. Whether it swayed the result is another question. I honestly don't know, the idea that more than 1.3 million people voted for a laugh seems far fetched but I've seen some pretty frighteningly stupid votes before (for example people of north African descent voting for the National Front here just to show that they were angry at the government)
Whilst I strongly agreed with his stance, I was highly disappointed with Oliver's covering of the issue. He discussed some of the significant issues of it but failed to make the connection from individual incidences to wider trends, so it comes off as arrogant dismissal of 1/2 of Britain.
I mean, I get it's easier to get humor that way...but I at least don't watch it for that.

I'm really interested in the "what next" implications of Brexit, so I'm curious for opinions from the couple Leave supporters in here. Saying leave is one thing, but the "how" of it all is another entire discussion. Here's two articles that are slightly different angles on the same thing. Take your pick.
http://www.vox.com/2016/7/5/12098156/bre...nn-diagram http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-...-industry/ If you voted Leave, what's your response to this? What do you want the leave to actually look like? I've seen the rah-rah "experts are dumb!" stuff which doesn't really interest me, but I'm curious if there is a logic/fact-based argument for how to pull off the Brexit gracefully. I haven't seen anything detailing it, but if it exists, I'd be very interested in reading.
Hard to say what's next, but more horrific xenophobic racism:

It's not exactly anything new, but I wrote a letter back to Australia giving my perspective of what things are like in London at the moment. I put it up on Medium, if anybody wants to look at it.
