With this many players signed up it's bound to happen, punishment or not. I like the added mystery of no map trading. Punishment never helps anyone, it only serves as a warning to avoid repeating the forbidden behavior. I never said it was effective in preventing problems, it's merely punitive after the fact. Anyway, dealing with players who quit isn't the real problem, it's more about the civs they leave behind (won't someone think of the civs?). Krill supports euthanasia providers so maybe we could release floods of coast tiles across an abandoned kingdom through T-Hawk's hackery/wizardry, although finding a temp/contract to hire/FTE emperor would be a better solution to try first. I'm sure in the end we'll do what we always do. We'll put out the word, and then beg, borrow, or steal until we coerce convince someone to take over. If that fails...the other options are convert to AI or flood the civ to erase them from the map, as a last resort. I thought he only supported involuntary euthanasia providers? They have helped over 1000 people turn their civilizations into mass coast."
Looking at that list, I am not as concerned as I would expect to be for a 33 player game. There are more than a few names missing from that list whom I think would be kind enough to sub in the event of technical or real life misfortune, for instance. But that's just me, and I'm not the game admin.
I'm sure though that looking for potential subs now would also be something we could do. Also there is a lot of mileage in mocking Dignitas it seems.
We could offer eliminated players a chance to take over abandoned civs. I'm not too concerned about spoilage because 1) this is an attempt at casual play and 2) abandoned civs are rarely contenders

Thats a cool idea pindy. I think we should keep it in mind as an option, but deal with quitting players on a case by case basis.

A second point in favor of letting eliminated players have a reincarnated life with another civ is that given the number of civs in the game, there is a non-zero chance that the second civ would be in a part of the map where the player previously had very little or no knowledge. Without map trading, this is a distinct possibility.
You know, you guys keep talking about the so-called Atlantis solution but I'm not sure it's really possible. Has T-hawk ever tried or said that it would not be a problem to modify the map in an ongoing game?
