But I could be wrong.
Balancing the starts to account for AH/non-AH sounds really hard Lewwyn - are you sure it's a good idea? If they can choose not to settle the cap for the AH food (4 can, 1&2 can't) I guess they can kick the can down the road a bit.
Yeah, I'm not too worried about the caps, I think everyone will be able manage and plan the techs, though maybe some better than others based on the civs they get. I made sure that each start was at the least WB viable with the PH and interesting and possibly rewarding with the sugar start.
Balancing the AH/non-Ah is tough, but the starts with AH copper still have the option to settle the copper and share a non AH food from the cap, so they're not completely stuck, they just have a few more AH food resources than the civs with AH in their cap. The starts that have the sheep in cap have less AH food, but I'm balancing it so that overall each start has an equal number of comparable food resources. It's a little tough because there are border inside islands and border outside islands that each players is going to be grappling with. I think the most aggressive settling players with more value on getting galleys out earlier might end up being more successful.

I don't think we're at that stage yet. And the map maker possibly shouldn't know this info until after he delivers the map...
So let me give a bit of an overview of where I'm at with the map right now. I will probably post some pics and WBsaves in the next couple of days, but right now I'm still working on the base continent that's going to be repeated. Yes technically I do know who is on what continent and who neighbors whom already because I had to roll RNG for the who was on which continent and who was which start, but I haven't really paid attention to it as I just put the numbers in my spreadsheet and didn't analyze them yet. I will give you that when I'm done the continent and I'm ready to duplicate it into the string I think.
Right now I've rejiggered the donut and placed the caps and the surrounding strategic resources. I've put in the 2 sets of border islands and placed most of the luxuries so far. I've got the rivers mostly set, but I haven't finished all the food balance. After today I used novices tool to check the tile count and I need to shrink and shift some of the borders so far the base continent has 6 inner sea islands and 15 outer sea islands. The mainland border areas are a jungled and in some ways in this way I've created a pretty clear "safe" mainland border that shrinks to 2 tiles wide between each player section. The islands are going to be huge flash zones though. I anticipate a lot of fighting and bitterness in those areas, particularly since 5 inland islands have silver and 5 outer border islands have furs.
But like I said, a couple more days and I'll post the base island. then I can take comments and fix it up, then I can duplicate the string and rejig anything that needs rejigging. I want to make sure the base continent is correctly and basically done so that I don't have to reduplicate it to fix anything once I've made the string.
It's my first map so I'm still learning a few things, but I'm happy that I'm able to technically make a smaller map and then just scale it up to 25 people. It allows me to do a lot more manually rather than just rolling a huge map and trying to edit it all from there. Less room for mistakes.

Might be good to start taking bets.
1) How many players settle T0?
2) How many settle on sugar?
3) How many settle on PH?

1) Anyone who settles t0 should build a monument first.
2) Starts 2,3, and 5 should settle on sugar and build worker 1st. Agriculture as either a starting tech or 1st researched tech
3) Start 4 has 6 food tiles available for both PH and Sugar. Sugar doesn't require AH so settle on the Sugar and tech Agriculture
3) Start 1 has no 6 food tiles available

But how many people actually do that?

1-3 people will put themselves out of contention by settling t0.
4 or 5 will settle on the Sugar
1 person will go nomad
Everyone else settles the PH.

Should we offer the the map size up for vote in the tech thread? I can make the map size standard, large or huge and it won't effect the actual map. We offer everyone the option of voting for difficulty IE: Emperor, but map size is also something that is part of the difficulty and could be voted on. What do you guys think?

Game started on receiving of leaders choices, so no game options should be voted on.
Huge is going to screw up tech rate so much most players will not finish BW before they gave a settler out so I don't buy your point on AH.

Which is literally the reason why I'm considering changing the map size from huge.

Basically I'm looking for advice on whether I should just make the map type large or standard. Yes people have started picking, but I'm willing to give a day for people to revise their choice if I give them a heads up its not going to be huge now.
