I agree - 1 start for all. There will be enough to try and figure how to compare just from the new game features.

I am definitely on the simple team for this first one. roll 1 start assign it to everybody and thats it. Leave all the playing with the map, same map from multiple angles etc for a later one, we dont have to hit everything first time round

Count me on Team Simple as well (though possibly as a half-point, since I still amp't sure if I'll even buy the game). My specific argument is against potluck (which I'm not sure if Jkaen, LKendter, and Ichabod are for or against?); I'm just not convinced there'll be enough people for it to work as a very first game. With 8 potential starts/civs, 16 players would mean I'd have all of... one person to compare my game to. And that one might not even write a lengthy report.
I'd guess at needing 32 players (4 per start/civ, guessing 50% non/small reporting rate) for any given participant to be reasonably certain of seeing someone else's description of 'their' game. That's... well, admittedly that's the number of people who've posted in this thread so far, so maybe it would work.
I just feel bad for the person whose comparable report is 'Huinesoron fails hilariously (Part 3)'.

Tell you what, when it gets closer to game start, I'll post a signup thread to see how much interest we'll expect to have, and go from there. If there are 10 people then yeah, just a single start is best. But if everyone gets hyped and we have like 50 people (you never know) then a multi-start scenario makes sense so the reports don't start to all meld together.
And yes of course it'll be simple in all other aspects of the setup. No scoring conditions, no special restrictions, no map edits. This will just be a come as you are and play what shows up type of game.

I might be in for an immediate PBEM (or whatever relevant multiplayer options there are). IF Civ 6 would happen to be an awesome game and stay relevant for 10 years this might be somewhat funny to look back at some point + it could be fun for lurkers to see the players' complete headache.

I'm happy with either a potluck or single-start event; advantage of a potluck though is, if there are enough players to justify running one, we'll generate useful data as a community about how diverse civs handle differently (or don't).

I feel that Potluck *is* a single start. It's the same map, same conditions and rules, but instead of only one of the factions being played and observed, all of them are -- by different people. Now mind you, it's not *fair* -- the different starts will not be identical and some will hold more opportunity than others -- but that's why I designed the concept to be scoreless.
It's not complicated. You don't get to pick which point of view you're playing. That's rolled for you at random by the game sponsor, and you play what you draw. Even a Potluck with low participation, to where some Civs have no one reporting and others only have one, would be more enlightening about Civ6 than a standard game. That would serve the community best, would it not?
The key question is whether the game will ship with enough access that the sponsor can set up the start files properly. If there's no way to set things up, then the event would have to revert to a standard start.
Fortune favors the bold. Go Potluck, go! Let them as have reservations be wallflowers while the adventurous get out on the floor and dance. ... That would be my input.

From what we've seen so far, mountains are too good, especially in the form of winding ridges.

I... hm. I consider this a compelling point and withdraw my complaint. I'd still like to see someone good play the same version as me, but For The Good Of The Community, I can go for this.

I've broken down and placed a preorder. I will be participating.
My preference is still 1 start for all. While I understand Sirian's point, I want to see what stuff others find that I missed. That will speed up me learning about the game.
