EDIT- crosspost with MWIN We've seen the stalemate wars and endless intrigue that will continue until space in RBPB1. A runaway civ would have been a refreshing difference imho.

I suppose you're right. I can see that a runaway spullla would also make the game bland, but at least we'd get the benefit of their superior spoiler threads for awhile longer.
2v1 or 3v1 would have been highly interesting to see how it played out. 4v1 is pushing it, but 5v1 is just a massacre. It's less like watching an NBA game and more like watching a Harlem Globetrotters game... a harlem globetrotters game where 25 Washington Generals players are able through sheer numbers to bumble their way to a win over the skilled Globetrotters

I like your analogy
Ideally Spulla will get pillaged to hell, lose a city or two, make a miraculous recovery, and then overrun everyone else!

I'd say at this point both games stand as good examples to how critical diplomacy is to win these games. Possibly also a good example that if anything diplomacy is more important when you're in the lead.

When exactly did the CoW start to form? My take on this is that for Spulla to have had a chance at getting out of this diplomatically they would have had to contact the HRE with plans to work together against Dantski before the CoW started to form. Then the HRE probably would go along with a plan that gave them almost all of Dantski's cities.
The only thing team Spulla could have done to prevent this happening would have been to slow their growth and better hide their strengths. In a no tech trading game there's no coming back if you fall behind so you can be damn sure that if somebody is pulling ahead so far not only in cities but in GNP as well then it's in everybody else's best interest to take them out sooner rather than later.
If tech trading were on then they could have perhaps formed an alliance with somebody else as it'd be in their best interest. With no tech trading the only real ways for the leader to get allies would be to team up with somebody who's given up on wanting to win or who just wants revenge against some other team.

If anyone can do it, Sullla can! He's a civ hero! He's like the Tiger Woods of Civiliz......er.... ok not so much...lets try that again
He's like the Mark Mcguire of ....hmm...no, still not right
He's like the Tonya Harding of C...ok now I'm just being ridiculous
Seriously though, he's an allstar; if Firaxis had any sense they'd sponsor him

They metagamed it wrong, simple as that, and there are better players out there than Sullla, as I'm sure he would admit.

I'd have to agree unfortunately. Additionally, that means you're giong to have to change your account tag since you're no longer Dogpile Target #1
