Remember, you guys in the lurker thread probably had a way better picture of the plako-LP dynamics. They don't appear to really care for each other (At least in one direction?) But I had no real insight into that.
They didn't seem buddy buddy certainly but there was certainly not enough evidence (again, from what I remember - this was awhile ago) that could rule out them figuring out a way to work together against me
I think your reasoning was fair enough. As someone recently argued in the lurker thread, if you weren't going to win whether you joined with Parkin or Plako, there's no reason why you should have been compelled to help one over the other, so working with the player you liked the most (and who offered the best deal, or in this case the only deal) made perfect sense.
It's almost impossible to not have favored players when lurking a heavily-reported game like this, and I think that a lot of people were really hoping for Plako & Friends to pull off an improbable turnabout due to their underdog status and LP's general tone putting a few folks off. So from that perspective it's easy for a lurker to see you as a "heel" for the internal narrative they create for the game, regardless of whether you've actually done anything to deserve the label. Yeah it would have been quite the pulling off. The only scenario I could see us coming back (and it was so far out there I didn't think it had a chance) was plako and friends stalemating LP while I continued to tech up, and then maybe taking some of plako's land in a war? Dunno - didn't have any better options....
I think Plako must have been nicer in thread and Parkin less nice in thread, which influenced lurkers but not us. I can't express enough just how friendly Parkin has been via chat and in-game. Yes we're giving him what he wants, but still he's been a real pleasure to work with.
Well, the difference is that plako is honest and Parkin is not. ASM pissed you (rego) off, but that was genuine frustration. I'll take that over fake friendliness any day. And you're overlooking the fact that Parkin did not once do anything that benefited you more than him - for example, he was the only civilization that wouldn't sign OB with you, and in the end he only did it when you gave him something extra.
plako's biggest blunder this game was closing borders around T170 or whatever it was, shortly after WK was eliminated. That was manipulated by Parkin. That caused you guys to sign a ridiculously long NAP (why would you sign a ~100-turn NAP that late in the game?) and cozy up to Parkin significantly as the "lesser evil" decision. Sure, Parkin outmaneuvered everyone and deservingly won the game. But I would never support a hypocrite.
