FWIW (and it doesn't mean much now) you should have done this before choosing CIV: starting with Fishing makes a big difference to the viability of Fish starts.

True enough. Though having a irrigated corn + no 3 hammer tile makes me think about how a WB first start could be competitive. My problem is 0 experience with coastal starts. I hate them and avoid them as much as possible. So, I'm really unsure about what openings can be competitive with coastal starts.
Yes, that's a little bit unfortunate. I was actually thinking about if we want to intentionally lose a turn and simply scout with both units. Settler could go 1NW of corn while scout goes 1SW onto the PH. Next turn scout can go 1SE to uncover that unforested tile and than we can reassess if we move onto the PH, settle where we are at the moment or go back to the fish. The turn lost would suck but if it helps to make an informed decision might be worth it. What I don't like on it though is that moving the scout in this way does uncover the most tiles to the west but the actual important tile isn't uncovered till the next turn. If that is another agri-resource there would be no doubt that ...
Well, actually scratch that. I think the decision is actually only between fish or PH. Moving to the FP-area isn't going to happen if I look at my first sim. It would need another corn or wheat or some such to make that move worthwhile. So moving onto the PH with the scout should show actually enough (because the fogged tile will be in the BFC of both locations).
Agreed, decision is either in place or on the plains hill. Moving the scout 1SW is best, it shows most relevant things we need to see.
Well, I don't think what we simmed is bad in any way tbh, Settler ~T35, but 2 workers already + Granary shortly after seems quite right for me. Not the strongest opening ever but I doubt we are the worst either. Middle of the pack I'd assume. And some of it can be probably made even better.
As for starting with Fishing: I would think we would have had to couple that with Mining to get BW quickly and be able to whip. That would mean Rome or Portugal. I don't value either very highly tbh and think in the long run the Ziggurat should help more than being a little bit quicker at the start. Of course we could have gone Ragnar of Rome and try to rush someone with Praets. Not certain that would be the game I want to play though. Also I agree with Ichabod that without a 3 hammer tile starting with a workboat would have been pretty hard. Doing it quickly in my head I think we would have the settler also around EOT34 with 1 workboat, 1 worker and probably 1 warrior. And in that case I'd again rather have the PH-start because it yields 2 workers which are overall more useful than 1 workboat, 1 worker, 2 instead of only 1 warrior and the settler at EOT35.
Btw: I fully agree with you Krill that we should have done that analysis before picking. I dismissed the Fishing-start too early and given how much time I usually put in the early micro I shouldn't have slacked there.
Candid scathing and terse analysis of every team to come soon, once I'm back in New York tomorrow...
