What if I'm at peace, and you have a scouting chariot by my land. I double move a worker and a defending spear, so that I can get two turns on an improvement, and I guard it with the spear on the second turn, and I wouldn't have been able to do this sequentially without fearing that you'd snipe my worker.

Is there a consensus that this is a jerk play? (It's certainly moving a unit twice in a row to get an advantage.)

As I said, in my experience players have very different views, and especially since we are coming form different places and do not know each other that well, I am trying to initiate discussion about players participating in this game what are their views on specific matters. Most important ones - leading to most acrimony, rage quitting and name calling - seem to be: double moving and city gifting.

Quote:* Double moving. I understand at least majority do not want them allowed. I also observed in many recorded games that the very suspicion of double-moves occurring can completely poison the atmosphere and kill the game. I propose the following rules:

A) Once the war is declared, never log in out of turn. Period.
B) Your turn is defined as either first or half part of the timer. Normally, the opponent playing in the first half should finish their turn before another team playing (if they finish before half of the turn, it is OK to play). If the first team did not play in their part, please try to wait if possible or contact them before playing your turn. Team playing first half: if you have problems with finishing on time, please post in the players thread and contact your opponents asking for more time.
C) If you want to play second half, play after your opponent turn before declaring war, if you want first half, play before them turn before DOWing
[Additional rule?] D) no peaceful double-moves, either. That is, please do not double-move in settler races, etc. Please do not play two turns in a row, wait at least 2 hours to give opponents a chance (e.g. to declare war wink)

* city gifting:
A) no city gifting unless returning to previous owner by a civ which is at war
B) no city gifting for less than 50 turns

What the teams think?

That's a double move. Basically, if you can see any unit that could affect your movements via a war declaration, you should play your turn, and not play the next one until the other player has played their turn.

As I said, my inclination would be to simply never take advantage of moving twice, it seem most in the spirit of fair play and on the top of everything it is easier to remember than somewhat artificial (imho) division into situations when it is OK to do so and when it is not. But as I said, when I asked one very experienced player about it (not playing with us now), he told me that he considers avoiding peaceful double-moves uncompetitive and simply foolish and he claimed that everybody does them.

I think that most important thing for this game - to ensure both fair play and good atmosphere - is that we are on the same page. Since peaceful double moves do not seem to be as accepted as I was told, I tentatively added them to the list, although I do not feel so strongly about them as about war double moves.

I am generally OK to play with any rules the majority agrees provided they are clearly stated in terms I understand and know how to apply and there is a reasonable chance that we all will interpret them in a similar way. As the discussion above shows, "not being a jerk" as the only rule does not pass this test frown.

This.
Never move twice in a row if you could gain an advantage from doing that as opposed to playing sequentially.

I think it does so long as players never do something that could be questionable, or at least ask lurker opinion first.

As I said, I tried it myself, with very bad results frown.

I agree that we always need "do not be a jerk" as the last rule. But I do believe all players will read the rules and try to follow them :big grin:.

So, calling all the players - and interested lurkers wink - please give me your opinion on double-moves and city-gifting. Players, no voicing any opinion will be interpreted as agreeing with whatever majority decides wink.
