[no players] Warsighs of the Newb: An Experiment in Lurking.

I mean, I personally wouldn't oppose playing with a rule that when things look bad for your civ, your obligation is to defend as ferociously as you can, but precedent is firmly on the side of Halvgud being able to do what he feels like. To be clear, I'm talking about whether lurkers should intervene. I'm not above blaming this game's eventual demise on his loldefense. cool

I think the difference is, when I don't care I don't give my cities away for nothing.

I stopped dedlurking Molach after an eternity of not reading his thread (and lack of games to read).

The classic example is buying lottery tickets. Many smart people are quick to criticize people who do that, because looking at the expected monetary value, it's a terrible deal. But it could actually be a very good deal if it makes the buyer happy and thereby improves their quality of life. People regularly pay much more than a dollar for happiness.

For me, buying a lottery ticket would make me sad, because I would be dwelling the awful EV for me, and the perceived uselessness of the whole thing overall. So it's illogical for me to do. For someone else, browsing RB would be illogical and the lottery tickets wouldn't be. It would be a mistake for me to assume that other people have the same values and reactions to stimuli as me, and are therefore being illogical if they do things that I wouldn't.

I like Seven's posts!

I know the discussion is already long gone, but I think in this big PB games, settling in a closer fashion to an SP game might end up working. I mean, pink dot cities to block land. I say this mostly due to the large number of opponents and the more random nature of the map (+ normal speed when it is the case).

I think "playing a solid game" in a 5 player PBEM has a way higher chance of landing you a win than "playing a solid game" in a +10 players PB. An early runaway in a 5 man game can end up getting almost all first to bonuses and key wonders (and settling cities in a more overlappy way is usually a key point to an early lead), not so much in a +10 players games, where there's always some player beelining for a not-so-usual-to-beeline tech or something similar. So, it's easier for the crippled-in-early-game civ to use the land advantage to catch up later.

Yeah, the strategies required to win a 10 player and 5 player game are different. One way to think of it is that in the 10 player game you have to play in such a way that by the time there are only 5 people left who can realistically win, you are in the strongest position to close out the game. So play aggressively and make plays that give you high rewards.

I've renaming that to Halvgud's Razor. And private messaging it to...Krill. Because that's better than posting in the thread where questions were asked!

Wait, which thread are you talking about now?

Are you guys trying to tell me to do something about this game?

I think I that he's just expressing frustration with Halvgud.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.
