Their position could work to their advantage if they grasp the setup, they could ally and rush clockwise / counterclockwise with their backs clear. To make up for the economic/developmental costs of early warfare, large gains would be needed, but if each could take out their nearest neighbour (and maybe choke the next one), they might be able to consolidate and come out ahead in the midgame.

Oh, it's certainly OK from a gameplay perspective, it's just that the same thing happpened in the last game.
The really weird thing is the amount of people looking at moving for no reason, with no valid knowledge that hte land will be better. Speaker might actually be right though, as moving onto the grass hill will give the capital cows as well as the irrigated wheat. But moving away from the island...
I have no idea what anyone is going to do. Cool.

Speaker + Sullla are about to make the wrong decision if they do move. They'll be fine on strategic resources (copper's still accessible, horses are 3rd ring of a 23 Delhi, and iron's back where they'd build their clams+furs city), but slowing down their island settling will hurt. Also, they'd be even better off if they spent TWO turns moving: If they take the hill 2S of the wheat, they get a grassland forest deer (5/1/0) and two grassland forested spices (3/1/3 post-calendar or 2/0/1+cottage), as well as the 4/2/0 cow and the 5/1/1 wheat. And they'll realize this the moment they settle (but not before)...

Their capital will be fine, they can cottage every single tile save the lake and the food at size 20. It also has plenty of food, and the hills to work early on. It'll be very versatile.
The down side is that they are only, what, 10 tiles from Mali now? And they are going to fall behind on settling the outer islands. I'm kinda hoping Dantski drops 2 Skirmishers on them, beause right now if they both try to plant towards one another, one of them might find that he is unable to get the city...weshould get to see some fireworks.

Well they don't know that they need to settle islands so without further Mapknowledge their reasoning is sound and the lucky cow is justifying them (in their minds). How much happens after they realize what a great capital 2S of the wheat would have been is another story.

Regoarrar's team figured out the map size. It will be interesting to see how soon the other teams pick up on it.
I guess everybody will found their 2nd city on the main donut so Sulla/Speaker may not necessarily fall behind on the island settling.
Could anybody provide a list of where the various teams start on the donut?

Everyone who calculates tech costs will figure out that it's standard. Also, if they check F9 (if only to double-check what rules are on), they'll realize that the map is officially standard, as well. So it'll be a good way to see how careful teams are with their micro.
Re: Rowain: Yeah, the ing is more from how 2S would be incredible. They could GP farm, or worker/settler spam from that all day long. Krill's right, Wheat+Cows+lots of grass, some hills, and forest are still really good.

I don't actually know for sure, perhaps Olodune can take a screenshot of the map (or several, whatever) and post them in here.
For Speaker/Sullla though...Dantski is directly south, and heading for Archery
