Rebalancing Civ4: RtR Mod

Would there be any interest in playing a RB Mod adventure or epic?
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Graphics should just be XML editing if the media is already part of the game.

Semi-serious question here: Between swords and xbows, which has the smaller niche use?

Swords, I think. Crossbows at least counter pikes and maces.

Random terribad suggestion: Sword +50% attack vs. archery (read: longbow)?

Still'd rather use HA, typically. Which means the problem might be less swords and more HA...

Crossbows must have more use, am I wrong? Versus either axes, or maces, they are the best absolute attacker by stats at their tech level, cheaper than maces, and more effective than maces unit for unit. Or they're good against a melee-based UU attack, say berserkers or praets.

I can't think of why I'd ever build a single sword instead of either an axe or a spear or a mix. I believe that no very strong player ever builds a single one except maybe to prove some weird point for an attack they'd win easily anyway.

How many people research Machinery and then don't research either Engineering or Guilds?

I think that highlights another side of the problem (and shows similarity with the sword problem); HA and knights rule military through movement and there isn't really much that can be done about that, it's pretty much integrated into the game on a level with slavery.

It'd have to be +%age against longbows specifically so archers didn't get absolutely murdered (like free XP level murdered).

Like Commodore said, HA tend to get used, because of tech path and availability reasons (it's basically easier to just build more HA and promote to shock than spend 1K beakers on Machinery for a specific counter). I agree that there are more scenarios where it seems that xbows are a useful build though; I'm not sure that those scenarios actually occur in reality though. Partially because xbows are countered by HA in the first place and then knights don't even acknowledge the existence of xbows.

Practically, crossbows do get salted into medieval stacks from time to time, if nothing else diversifying the counter-promos needed. Which while in theory swords could, in practice they don't.
