I'm not exatly a genius at understanding programming, but what would be the main issues that a PB server encountered?

And ... what is the status of this game? Up on SpaceRantXenu's server? Up later on Cale later?
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Caledorn is going to get it back up soonish, tomorrow or so I think was what he said, whenever he gets the replacement part installed in his server. I'm standing by in case something goes horribly awry and the game needs a new temporary home. Looks like three or four people were able to connect to the test game, seems likely most others will be able to as well if Caledorn's repairs don't go well.

Played: Pitboss 18 - Kublai Khan of Germany Somalia | Pitboss 11 - De Gaulle of Byzantium | Pitboss 8 - Churchill of Portugal | PB7 - Mao of Native America | PBEM29 Greens - Mao of Babylon

The main issue is the amount of disk read/write operations. An SSD isn't too happy with a lot of those as it degrades the memory chips. A regular mechanical HD handles that better, but ironically the amount of disk I/O operations was most likely what killed my old HD. The old HD was a Western Digital Green edition HD, which is an aggressive power saving HD that parks the HD heads very frequently to conserve power. The new HD I've bought is a WD Red edition HD which is designed for 24/7 usage (like in a NAS or a server), so it will handle it a lot better.

Network operations isn't an issue for me, since I have a 50 mbit (both up and down) fibre optic connection.

As for the game coming back up, I will get it back up tomorrow, temporarily running it from the SSD. The game doesn't really requre much space. A few GB for all the Pitbosses I've hosted. But I don't want the SSD to die too soon because of the same issue (disk I/O) as the disk that just died, especially since the SSD is the property of a friend of mine and I am just borrowing it from him since he doesn't need it at present.

The game is still down, right? I'm assuming because the "civstats" page doesn't load. I just don't want to miss a turn if/when everything gets rolling again.
I'm just doing my best out here.

I seriously doubt any SSD is going to take a meaningful endurance hit from hosting Pitboss games.

Under regular conditions, without mods etc, that is correct. However, the logging system (that I had enabled), writes a lot to disk. And then the Spanish Mod used in the ISDG also has a separate logging system that writes a lot to disk (and I am uncertain if I can disable that). Under normal circumstances hosting a Pitboss involves writing a login autosave, a turn autosave, and the rest is kept in RAM. The rest is mostly about reading the savegames whenever it's needed, and network transfers, which doesn't really affect an SSD much at all (as opposed to a mechanical drive which does more or less the same mechanical operation on both read and write with the drive heads). I think everything is kept in RAM though, and that the read operations are done only when I load a game. But anyways, the logging systems are the issue (and might very well be part of the reason for the failing drive considering how big those logfiles were, and how often people logged in).

I just had a thought. Weren't there some fixes and updates that were being talked about for the Mod? Specifically such as adjusting the score list such that those with lower resolution can actually see the full list of names? I, for one, really hate not being able to see the full list and having to hide the list so I can click the buttons at the top of the screen.

With the game offline, wouldn't this be the ideal time to roll out the new version of the Mod to get everyone to have it installed by the time the game is ready to come back up?

The game is back up on my side. Can someone please log in and verify that the internal firewall in the server is configured correctly, and that the game is actually alive?
