Yeah, of course its hard to compete with Joao at this point in the game. I think that's the biggest part that makes it seem kind of hopeless though - we pretty much are selling out as hard as we can to expand fast and we're tied with dtay on city count behind TBS, Oxy and Thoth.
Anyway, basically we'll just keep pushing and see how it goes. Hopefully we can stay competitive and take advantage of opportunity somewhere else in the midgame. But it sure doesn't look great right now.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

I was going to say this but mack beat me to it. It's Joao. This is what Joao does, right before he bankrupts the empire and crawls out of the abyss. Buck up, man. Here, some inspiration (with a little islands flair):
If you don't like what he's doing slamming down cities all over the place, feel rage rather than resignation and shove his teeth in! You can't be the only one that has noticed his city spam.
But honestly, anyone worth half a shit at civ should be winning/ahead with Joao over Zara at this point, no? And, while you showed the graphs that support your OH NOES TEH SKY FALLS, I'd be interested in seeing his GNP graph for a more complete picture. IMP means free hammers, either for workers (oh, thanks EXP!) or for units, so it's no wonder his power is high. All he needs is a single chop for the granary. With a smart city placement (and so no need for monument or garbage like that), after that what else does he want to build? Units! I'm pretty sure that I was more certain than you are now at this point in PBEM 49 when novice towered over all the rest of us with CRE/IMP Greece, but I wasn't the only one who was ready to spike his tire. Neither of us won, but nothing is insurmountable at this point, except possibly Thoth having the map to himself wherever he is. Joao gets ahead, and then people find a way to reel him in until other, later traits start to shine.

I'm not even sure I merit even the tiniest of font on the marquee at this point. But I'll take it!
Also, I hate your marignal wheat city. You're leaving four food on the table with the lighthouse-able lakes. I'd take those at the expense of the corn which you could then use to put up a quick fishing city. I wouldn't be shocked to find a seafood down there to go with the corn, if we can ever keep the scouts from dying.

Yeah, I hate it as well. Maybe I'll take another stab at dotmapping over there.

Like that would be cause and effect with you.
Why don't you try painting yourself blue to learn Swahili?
I hate that everyone knows me so well.

Doesn't he have a religion and Henge?
Yeah, precisely. He's basically Joao of Inca with a religion and a prophet incoming. He's not going to go bankrupt. He's also got the very real benefit that people are distracted by Thoth's more showy display of needing to be reined in. This is definitely TBS' game to lose.

Well. I knew the settler was coming. It's what I would have done. His axe, 2 spear and 2 chariot will reach the PH there across the way on t85. It will reach the plains tile next to us T86. So he could either settle the hill or the flat land, our axe can't reach the hill until t86.
Anyway I figured all of this out a few turns ago. The issue is that we're pushing MUCH farther in this direction. It is the farthest from home. Our settlers cost more and TBS can react faster. He's had more map information longer. In addition TBS has 4 happy to our 2.
Its fine.
