Civ 6 is for long term strategy and planning, but Into the Breach is great for spending an hour or so solving puzzles. Civ is shit for that. It's better than playing sudoku.

Some of us like an occasional sudoku puzzle.
Into the Breach can be fun for short bursts. And there is the whole "giant mecha punching giant bugs in the face" aspect, which never gets old. I agree that the game has a strong puzzle flavor to it, rather than being rogue-like; whether that is a positive or negative depends on how much you like puzzles. Overall this one has not grabbed me nearly as strongly as FTL did, but there is fun to be had This is a very good summary. If you like the puzzle aspect you will certainly be happy with the game. I think one could say the combat with all the options is a step up from FTL. It's just that I feel the "journey through space" background and progression system in FTL was more gripping than the "defend 4 islands" story of ItB. And what's up with the really strange option of fighting the boss after clearing only 2 islands? It's like FTL would have told you after sector 3: "Hey, there are actually 7 sectors in the game, but if you want to, we will just let you fight the boss right now."
The final mission says it is "scaled to your progress" but what exactly they mean by that is unclear. More vek? Tougher vek? How does it scale?
I have played a 2 island victory and a 4 island victory, and felt the 4 island one was much easier because my squad was so much stronger. I guess the vek were stronger and more numerous, but the difference in my squad was so great that the final battle was much easier to win after clearing all four islands. Having all three pilots at max level, enough cores to actually upgrade all my mechs a bit, and a couple extra weapons and passives makes a huge difference.
