Think how different the game would have been if they had escaped. There would have been no islands for Korea to escape to (and thus we'd probably still have a Rome in the game ).

I think Mahabodhi has already been built in the city.
My guess is Artist bomb for cultural dominance vs Inca in the area and extra Shrine income for several turns.

Wasn't Spullla laughing about Danski building the Statue of Zeus before? War weariness seem to actually be crippling Nakor's research rate right now because of it. Is this thing a really underrated disincentive in multiplayer Civ?

I think that it is very underrated - especially when conflict is inevitable in a game such as this! Just imagine the damage it would cause if Spullla had it - especially during the 5v1 dogpile!

Short of finding a way to lob the Statue in the path of the advancing HRE armies, I'd say it's effect in the war as a whole is limited.

In a war this one sided, yes.
In more balanced wars or wars of attrition, that is where it strikes hard. I think Nakor is at 20% on the culture slider already in this war - if the war was to drag on with some major losses, then it turns the tide and cripples both research and production of the opposition
