RBP2 Lurker Discussion Thread - No Players!

:2dance: <-- thats me and my pbem buddies, having fun

Thanks Jowy, from one Pitboss fan to another. Yes, it's ironic that the Pitboss games are down right now, for about the fourth time in the last 2 months.

On the other hand with PBEM we've had...one game almost end because players were so mad about the pace, another game loose useful features 50t in, the pace slow down to 1t per week several times, a pretty hard limit on the number of civs in the game, balance issues with turn order...

Sounds like a lot more fun to me! wink

EDIT: Just so I'm not just posting junk, I do agree with scooter that THIS pitboss game isn't fun right now, but when we launch the No Rules 2 Pitboss Game we'll solve that problem wink

EDIT 2: When I played in No Rules Pitboss (1) we managed a game at Epic speed with zero reloads due to anything other than server connection issues.

Are you looking for backlash, or for resolution?

I think he meant he was looking for resolution but didn't expect Spulla to agree, and would rather they attack him instead of Serdoa.

I really hope so. There's no point in being exactly right with no game to play. I'm still hoping somebody will try to meet in the middle.

Me too. I think this issue has been blown up out of proportion and caused even more bad feeling on both sides, not to mention delaying the game even more. Hopefully a compromise will be met.

That already happened. Speaker and Sullla just don't want to meet in the middle, they want to meet on their front yard. And in case I just embrassingly messed up the idiom: there was already a compromise made that both removes Speaker's original fear of reloading but still enforces the rules. However, it wasn't accepted by Speaker and Sullla.

Before we get too judgmental here, I think it is worthwhile to remember that Spullla thought they could do same turn diplo and thus gift the city to Dantski which is why they keep saying that them breaking the rule has no effect on the outcome. Let them have a chance to respond to the nice writeup on the rules (i.e. the no city gifting and then moving again within the turn)...

You know, I would apologize for continuing to thread-jack, but this rules debate has gotten old, I'm not going to wink.

Sunrise, as I was writing that last post, I was fully expecting a response from you - thanks for not disappointing! It's really a preference thing though... Actually PBEM4 is the first that's really struggled to get the turns in it seems... The one I'm in (PBEM3) hums along pretty nicely at 1 turn/day. The only time Pitboss is faster really is peacetime, but when you start dealing with turn splits, the timer tends to run all the way down pretty much. This game has been also doing 1 turn/day for quite some time, so I don't see a whole lot of difference in game speed. Of course, if you have players who struggle to play within their window then it's a pain, but that's something that should be sorted out before the game starts.

Also - about the limit on civs problem, I think we've learned from PB3 that lots of civs in a game is a total disaster. To me, around 6 players is the ideal number for a game anyways, so why not go PBEM? You'll have zero rule disputes all game... The turn order balance thing is very minor in comparison to balance issues that come with a turn split, so I don't see that as a problem either. That's not even to say all the connectivity problems that can arise in a PB.

Of course, a No Rules Pitboss might be even better, but then a player who has very limited hours when he can log in is heavily disadvantaged against double moves. That's no problem if you can commit a lot of time to a game like that, but that doesn't sound fun to me. Again, personal preference.

Basically, all of the above. It is human nature to get angry when not given what one wants, and it takes an awful lot of composure and training to turn the other cheek, as I expect a teacher to understand.

(Also...just so everyone here knows, I just finished a 12.5 hour day, with a grand total of half an hour off starting at 0939. I'm tired. I'm not 100% focussed on moderating the game, but I can't see anything fundamentally wrong with what Serdoa posted, and real life time does have an impact on moderating games, never mind forums. That is why I posted Serdoas' draft. And I'm sorry, but I can't explain more than that).

However, Griselda, I'm writing you a PM right now, so please bear with me while I gather my ravaged neurons for an argument.

Quote:This leads to a second, greater problem: because the ruleset has become so convoluted in length, Krill has effectively become the only one who can interpret it. Please look at the previous post in this thread; Krill wrote at several points "section ____ was written to mean this, and section _____ had this intention." It's all well and good, but the players are essentially being asked to guess Krill's intentions - read his mind - and heaven help you if you draw the wrong conclusions!
It's funny because Krill didn't actually write it. lol
