I think I just mean that a lot of players seem to not be having a ton of fun here, and a lot of that can be traced back to the map generator giving them super frustrating starting areas. Possible I'm misreading it.

I'm pretty sure SD just complains no matter what. Unless he is rushing someone he finds fault in the map.
But ya these random maps are um special; I do think El Grillo's green version may be more to peoples tastes for future use. This one really is pretty good though as far as balancing neighbors goes. There is no real way for anyone to conquer their way to a safe backline, which makes it better than other maps I can think of. Its a much better map than PB64; mostly because I think the generator just does a better job with 8 people vs 6.

SD's start required a very specific opening to play it optimally and frankly SD does not have to skill to figure out how he could have played it, hence his frustration.
I agree that these sorts of random maps are hard, but lets be fair: players moan about all maps.

My comment was in reference to the random part specifically. I think these ones are viewed more casually because one might get screwed, so the intention is to just have fun with whatever you get and not try too hard. But then if one does get screwed, the reality is that they still have to login 1-2 times per day for months, which makes it hard to feel casual.
I don't think you're misreading it, just trying to provide an explanation for your observation.

Ah yeah. I definitely get that assumption - oh it's a casual game, who cares if I get map screwed. But yes, it starts to catch up to you when you realize you have a leader/civ you didn't pick, land that's borderline unplayable, and no prospects for improvement.
Or, hypothetically, you might have a good leader and good neighbors which might make your position winnable except you started with 0 luxuries within 30 tiles of your starting location and also on an island. You know, hypothetically.

In addition to his general city placement order and other placement we mentioned earlier I have to say I think if I was SD I would have used Gav being 2v1 to move Nibru 1S. Not only does it make a great canal but it allows him to fit a little city on the east coast where his c is. It also ensures no one else will get that pig. Is Gav going to send his praets against your shock vultures when is already in a 2v1 war and behind. I doubt it. Edit: he could also just have moved Ur 1N and kept his safer southern locaiton and put filler on the hill in the middle.
It also gives him 1 more hill which he seems to desperately want.

I'd call this picture the Original Sin for Superdeath's game. Kish is a growth curve and land claiming back breaker. I get that he was happy starved, but you've really got to recognize that you're squeezed for land and push into the chokes ASAP. Getting cut off at the land chokes put a pretty hard ceiling on what he could do here longterm. I think his land is genuinely fine due to having FIN. He's got a bunch of coast, and even better a bunch of Lighthousable FIN Lakes. His land issue is quantity, not quality IMO.
Even setting that aside, I don't quite know why he wouldn't be trying harder to conquer his neighbor who he thinks has way better land. Bing's land might be good, but his geographic location is kinda lousy, so baiting a dogpile should be doable.

He also neighbours Gavagai. Not an easy target, but a 3v1 seems worthwhile in this context.
Edit: I really hope the unworked horse in mjmds picture is temporary.
