so i tried to play a few ladder mp games in the last couple days to prepare myself for pitboss/pbem combat




i've read a few basic civ iv mp guides from CFC, etc, but most of them state stuff that is fairly obvious - or they tell you a lot about what to do, but not about in what order to accomplish or how to prioritise or how to balance expansion with military

does anyone have ANY suggestions for how best to start familiarising myself with MP, and more specifically, MP warfare?

Playing endless games on the ladder isn't likely to help very fast, because unlike Starcraft 2, when I lose, I can't watch a replay to see exactly what my opponents did so I can learn from them. If I was able to read what my opponents were doing, I wouldn't be losing so much.

When I was improving at Starcraft 2, I actually took a few lessons from a pro who was kind enough to offer - we sat down for a few hours of intensive coaching and it made me 1000x better at the game - can the same thing work in Civ?

World Championships start today! Let's get hyped!

Here's the schedule of matches from Leaguepedia. Cloth5 did a pretty good write-up of all the teams and how they like to play. You can find them as previews at this page.

Today's big game is OMG vs SKTT1 (16:00 PDT). Both of these teams are favorites for the overall championship.

Other interesting games today:
TSM vs. OMG - can TSM beat an Asian team? (answer: probably not)
SG Ozone vs Vulcun - can Vulcun beat an Asian team? (answer: possibly)
Gambit vs SG Ozone - is Gambit still world class? (answer: Edward was very good)

Not sure if anyone here is still into Pokémon here, but there is a fan made version that has just gone into open beta. All 649 (minus version specific pokémon) are available. Beats the shit you find on facebook, anyway.

Has anybody played this? TotalBiscuit is super enthusiastic about it, calling it his "Game of the Year" and basically the best game he has played in the last 25 years:



Since there seems to be a rather wide rating range on Metacritic, I would be interested in some first-hand impressions.

This was shared on my newsfeed today.

Frankly, it doesn't apply to me as I avoid the sort of games where this can happen - either by not playing those games at all or by playing in passworded or private games only.

But I can relate, especially as I do get to watch over the shoulders of my sons, who are less picky about their gaming environment.
