  Questions about Gaze attacks

What stats do gaze attacks check for when applied? Do they all use resistance, or some other stat? I ask because I noticed that Chaos Spawns absolutely decimate things in melee combat, even rare summons like Wraiths. You would imagine that with Death Immunity, the Wraiths would fare better than some common swordman group, but apparently not. Bless did nerf their effect a bit, but that spell specifically guards against Chaos and Death effects so it doesn't tell me much.

While I'll try to make some of these one at a time myself, I probably can't do them all.

If you want to contribute, please post your work here. By posting, you agree that your work will be included in Caster of Magic II.

Note that even if art already exist in the game, if you want it replaced because you think yours is better, that's fine. Post your work and if I like it more than the exisiting one, I'll replace it. Otherwise, it'll be placed in the optional art folder. As the game uses unencrypted, plain image files, users can use optional art simply by overwriting the files in the game data folder.

I will especially need help on the global enchantments and the overland summoning image for the creatures, I can do the unit icons easily, just had no patience for those after adding 20 new spells. I need a break.

If you need information (size of the image required, etc), ask. If you are one of the alpha testers, you can find all the game images in the data folder, if it's the same size as the ones you find there, it's perfect.

For the global enchantments, we probably also need to decide what should be on the picture first.
For the two city enchantments that were split, the two "Blessing" spells can keep the existing colored ground effect but the two new ones need to have something different.

Just wondering if there is any interest in a Civ 6 SG game. My idea would be to bring back the famous variant where we need to conquer the whole map, while never capturing cities with military units (i.e. we need to use the new Loyalty system). Perhaps we can get some better knowledge about his new mechanic.

With Krill gone the driving force behind RtR has stopped driving. When He left He was pretty happy with the state the mod was in, but are you?

Charriu is very kindly maintaining things, but rightly doesn't want to be in charge of the vision, so I thought we could have a poll to figure out just what the community wants from the final version of RtR. But to decide what should be in the poll I wanted to know what items in the changelog annoy you, are unnecessary or unbalanced, AND what your proposed solution would be. I've listed a few complaints I make and have read others making:

- Unpillagable villages and towns ( rant )
- Inca/India cheap granaries (why are the best buildings in the game 3/4 price?)
- 5 turn peace treaties (surely ceasefires do this job already?)
- Privateers need Optics/Paper (seems fine really  pirate )
- Xbows have collateral and require construction (can we put them back to normal?)
- Ocean is sloooooow (I'm actually surprisingly okay with this)
- Galleys with 2xp are too quick (give them nav2 instead of nav1?)

I'm sure there are others that I've missed. Let us know what they are - no gripe too small! Once we have a good list I'll make a poll.

Edit: More things:
- SotL have collateral but are vulnerable to privateers (I quite like this, but it comes under "silly navy")
- Towns act as forts for boats and air units
- Lighthouse, Harbor, Customshouse, Drydock, Moai give XP to boats
- New Naval flanking, drill and sentry and changes to base promotions and movement of boats
- Barb animals get bonus vs melee but never beat scouts (I like this one!)
- Trebuchet on Machinery, not Engineering (I like this one too!)
- Barracks giving culture
- Temple requires Meditation not Priesthood

  Caster of Magic II - AI reroll table

This is the table used to reroll AI wizards that get no endgame spells that makes them competent, to avoid disappointing games where the final opponent doesn't do anything. It might be unfair but I rather have this than win a game because the final enemy rolled Consecration, Ruler of Heaven, Enlightenment, Clairvoyance, Herb Mastery, Earth Gate as their very rares from 4 Life and 4 Nature books.
In the previous spell system, roughly 1 in 20 wizards actually needed to reroll as not getting anything from this list was unlikely.
With the addition of more very rare spels, this might happen slightly more often, but the feature is still necessary as dual realm wizards can't pick any guaranteed very rares.

So this is the table expanded with the new spells added to it. If the AI has all of the 1, 2 or 3 spells or retorts in any of the rows, it's valid. If it has none of them, it is rerolled.
Most of the time this results in the AI having a very rare creature spell but of course it's not the only thing they can get. It doesn't guarantee anything specific for the AI - as long as they have any of the listed lines, they can't reroll.

  Caster of Magic II - AI disjunction priority table and behavior

Currently the AI handles Disjunction modifiers the following way :

Having AEther Binding doubles the chance to cast Disjunction but does not affect target selection.
Having Runemaster triples the chance to cast Disjunction but does not affect target selection.

If the enemy spell is protected by a dispel resistance effect, the AI ignores it for target selection and chance to cast Disjunction.
Unless the spell is one of those two the AI wants gone at all costs (Meteor Storm and Power Link), the AI will not adjust the slider cost for the increased dispel resistance so any bonus from the resistance directly reduces the chance for the Disjunction to be successful. Otherwise, the AI uses the exact slider cost necessary to eliminate the target spell at a 100% chance, or the maximal slider cost if it's not possible to reach 100%.

If the AI is Runemaster or has AEther Binding, they will reduce the slider cost to half (or one third if they have both).

We might want to consider the AI to react differently to dispel resistance effects.
-Reducing the global priority of the protected spell makes the AI dispel someone else's spell instead if one with a greater priority is available. This means picking Specialist will basically make the AI dispel the other people first, not you, assuming enchantments of the same priority.
-Reducing casting priority only makes the AI cast less disjunction if the top target is protected, essentially protecting all global enchantments in play equally. (this is probably a bad solution)
-Setting priority to zero if casting resistance is high but ignoring it otherwise can allow the AI to not waste resources on trying to dispel things they have low chance to successfully dispel at all.

I think the third version is best, but should exclude the "must remove" spells from this zero priority.

We also need to decide how much Disjunction resistance to grant from Ruler of Heaven.
Assuming we picked the third option for AI behavior, adding 100% resistance here is most likely enough - the AI will not even attempt dispelling your enchantments unless they are on the list of "must dispel".
I do think "cannot be dispelled" is a more appropriate way to convey to the player what will actually happen and also helps avoiding save-reload cheese to dispel through the AI's dispel protection effect. It might be worth excluding Runemasters from that, probably not AEther Binding though, but then it might be better to keep the simple text of 100% resistance and keep the AI's decision to not try dispelling those hidden.

So we could have

A. Your global enchantments have 100% higher dispel resistance
B. Your global enchantments cannot be dispelled
C. Your global enchantments cannot be dispelled except by Runemaster wizards.
D. Your global enchantments cannot be dispelled except by Runemaster wizards, and have 100% higher dispel resistance against them.

I will post the updated priority tables when it's ready.

  Navigable rivers / Brown-water navies

I apologize if this has been discussed before (didn't find it searching for rivers but might've missed it in some other topic), but I was reading the elimination of lakes from ( http://seravy.x10.mx/CasterofMagic/CASTEROFMAGIC.HTML <- is this uptodate?  It has some typos e.g. the common unit block for Nomads has some text copied from lizardmen ) and wondering if you couldn't make rivers sailable.

  This would make rivers a useful feature for troop mobility, as was the case historically, since you would use boats, and - if this is possible from the map generation - you could connect each lake to the sea by rivers, and then the computer would be able to sail it's ships out to the ocean?

  I suppose the problem would be in combat, where river hexes would need swimmable combat-squares in which the boats could fight, and it's not obvious what embarked units would do in that instance?

First column is the priority. Lowest avalable is chosen for research first. Additional conditions listed where applicable, except those that delay spells if the AI knows a spell of the same AI category (for example they will research Djinn later if they already have Hydra) making it redundant to research. Ignore the hex numbers and zeroes, they're obsolete but I'm not wasting my time on removing them.

  Caster of Magic II research costs

Yellow are changes or new spells. Green spells have their old cost.
Insulation probably isn't worth 1920 but I don't want to make Lightning Bolt or Fire Giant more expensive and none of the other spells are worth a higher cost either. This does open up at least the possibility to skip researching that spell, reaching rares that much faster. In cases of using heroes against Chaos wizards, researching it will still be essential so in the cases the spell is useful, it is worth the price. (or not, as items can be made with the power so...idk.)
This does show Chaos really has a bunch of useful but mediocre spells at uncommon, there is nothing worth putting into the 1920 RP slot.
Ok, Immolation actually is quite awesome but if it becomes more expensive, Chaos will be even harder to play and slower, same reason why I didn't want to raise the cost on Lightning Bolt.
Raise Volcano? If you do spam it you can make okay amounts of power but even 1280 RP eats up all the power generated from 8 volcanoes for the next 50 turns. Making economy spells that have a slow return cost a lot to research is a bad idea.
Mystic Surge is good but it's gambling. Most people wouldn't invest a lot of RP into a spell that "might turn the battle around if you are losing".

Edit : looking at all 5 realms at once, Chaos uncommon isn't so bad.

Nature is almost entirely the same (in fact most spells match another one in Nature even in their use - spiders=gargoyles, lightning bolt = ice bolt, crack's call = mystic surge, chaos channel = land linking, chimeras = lizard, change terrain = raise volcano, catapult ~= fireball, leaving cockatrices, nature's cures and transmute against fire giant, immolation and insulation which is about the same total utility. Of course some are better in one or the other but it feels roughly equal overall)

Life is worse - Prayer is outstanding, Endurance and Stream of Life are good, but the other 7 spells are all stuff I'd prefer almost any Chaos spell over instead. So overall Chaos is better, it just lacks the one awesome outstanding spell that is Prayer. (Fire Storm used to fill this role...)

Sorcery is a mixed bag - there are several very good spells but they are also spells too expensive to make a big difference at uncommon, they are more an investment for a later game. So while Sorcery uncommon is better, it's also slower than Chaos, meaning overall I think they are evenly matched.

Death uncommon is by far the best in the game, no competition here, Chaos can't even compare.

So overall, 2 realms are about as strong as chaos, 1 is weaker and 1 is stronger at uncommon spells.

Which means Chaos itself is good as it is, the problem is their spells are so evenly matched in power it's super hard to pick the 3 for the "higher research" slots, nothing is that much better than the rest. Maybe we can get away with making Lightning Bolt 1920 and Insulation at 1600? But if it costs too much, it's probably better to just not research it until later, and later the rares are available and not that much more expensive... so I think it can't be 1920 afterall.

Something else : Chaos Spawn went up to 4000 from 3000 (or 2500?), I don't think it's really worth that much but the slots were needed for the now rare Fire Storm and the new Inner Power.
