  Glory To Arstotzka! ("Papers, Please")
Posted by: Gustaran - August 9th, 2013, 10:15 - Forum: The Gaming Table - Replies (10)

The game "Papers Please" came out on Steam yesterday. From the FAQ:

The communist state of Arstotzka has ended a 6-year war with neighboring Kolechia and reclaimed its rightful half of the border town, Grestin.
Your job as immigration inspector is to control the flow of people entering the Arstotzkan side of Grestin from Kolechia. Among the throngs of immigrants and visitors looking for work are hidden smugglers, spies, and terrorists. Using only the documents provided by travelers and the Ministry of Admission's primitive inspect, search, and fingerprint systems you must decide who can enter Arstotzka and who will be turned away or arrested.

So yes, basically you are checking passports/doccments all game long, but it is surprisingly intriguing how this simple task is connected to a story and some tough moral choices you have to make. Metacritic ratings are quite good as well.

In this thread, we can only post compliments hippy.

Sulla, you are literally the best turn player and ship's captain in history, and I'm sad you lost your enthusiasm for this game, but glad you are still involved and posting hatsoff.

scooter, your diplomacy has been a work of art throughout this game, it has been a privilege watching you operate hatsoff.

KJN, ditto for you on the C&D, and kudos for being so dedicated you even did work on your holiday hatsoff.

sunrise089 & NH, thanks for stepping in to some pretty big shoes...have patience with us during the transition and don't worry about hurting our feelings hatsoff.

CFC, you have a real nice set of smileys on your site mischief.

Where exactly is created item located?

On behalf of our new member TwilightSparkletheAlicorn I have created this thread.

(August 4th, 2013, 05:48)TwilightSparkletheAlicorn Wrote: Of what is left, personally for me one of the most interesting things to know is "Where exactly is created item located?" Well, the obvious reason is "Fortress Town tile", but it is not as right as it seems. The thing is, after your empire expands (I do not know the exact factor, but it is possibly the amount of towns or/and movements of summoning circle), the item is not summoned in any of my towns (heroes in them cannot pick it up freely)! Yes, I can still teleport it to the vault for free, but I'd like to know where my item is created.
There's more at comments of Summoning Circle, Create Artifact or Enchant Item, I think.

Quote:Darrell: You owe me a game review.
Ilios: I'm playing endless space
Ilios: and i bought shadowrun returns, for nostalgic reasons
Darrell: is it any good?
Ilios: i don't know
Darrell: Nice review.
Ilios: you're welcome
i dunno man
i can't seem to enjoy any of the new games that are coming out
Darrell: Maybe they all suck.
Ilios: that or I have moved on
and i should take up knitting
Darrell: Maturity is over rated, you should avoid moving on
Ilios: then they better start producing games I play for longer than two hours
Darrell: Its all the fault of consoles.
The dumbing down has been going on so long now
Ilios: what isn't
true
i've even considered joining an RB game
but i'm not sure i'll be able to keep pace with the little one on the way
Darrell: If there was a Pitboss or PBEM starting up with an infinite turn timer, I'd be all over that
Because I can't play very often either
Ilios: maybe we should just that
start a game with a deliberate slower pace
Darrell: find all the people old enough to have kids and start a slow pace game?
I'd do that
FFH?
Ilios: but i'm not sure people would stay interested
Darrell: eh
hard to say
Ilios: i would
i think
Darrell: if they get bored and dont play for a few weeks, it wouldn't bother me smile
Ilios: haha
'oh, look at that, a save, is that game still going on?'
FFH or BTS, i don't mind either way
Darrell: I actually don't care either
Its the "I don't give a shit" game
Ilios: just something to direct my considerable brain power at
Darrell: settings? could care less
timing? don't care
Ilios: winning conditions?
no matter
Darrell: whatever
anything
time vicotry is fine for me
Ilios: lol
Darrell: so should I post this chat log and see if anyone is interested?
Ilios: no

  Some Team Organization/Efficiency Comments
Posted by: scooter - August 7th, 2013, 11:53 - Forum: CFC Multi-Team Pitboss - Replies (13)

Let's talk about where we are right now as a team. We're in a difficult position for a few reasons:

* In-game situation is tense, so everyone is on edge
* Turn player transition
* A widening gap between the "main group" that is logging in and/or paying very close attention and those who are following more loosely.

The reality is, as much as we try to emphasize the "democracy" portion of the gap whenever possible, we have so many cities and units that it is just not possible to discuss every city and/or tactical move as a team, other than via livestream. I think we need to chat for a few to 1) nail down roles and 2) guide discussion to be more productive than it has been lately.

Leading Roles

Primary Turn-player/Pilot: NobleHelium
Primary Tactician/Co-Pilot: sunrise089
C&D: kjn
Diplo: scooter
PR @ CFC: Ceiliazul
Turn Tracking Thread updater: ??

The last one we probably need to fill. IMO, the pictures and words posted in the turn discussion thread are sufficient, but turn reports are disjointed into sections now more than ever. This is fine given the state of the game, but it would be nice if at the end of each turn, someone could go through the discussion thread, pick out the highlights, add some minor commentary if necessary, and post it into the tracking thread. You don't need to be able to login to do this, it should be mainly copy/pasting and organizing things that are already posted. Do we have any volunteers for something like this? This would be perfect for someone trying to find a way to contribute further.

Turn-by-turn Discussion

Primarily, I think we need a "Tactical Discussion" thread. I'd like one separate thread where we can discuss purely tactical things without it getting mixed in with "which city do we draft" and "when do we whip X" and metagaming theorizing. So if there's support for this idea, let's create a thread like that, fill it with screenshots of our border, and start plotting the ideal place to put our units and/or discuss places for pre-emptive strikes.

Diplo Discussion

I've complained about this with an unfortunate lack of tact, but the quality of this thread really degrades when we get to discussing CFC. Anytime a topic relating to them comes up, we get a "Crazy CFC Post" thing going on where people suggest conspiracy theories, NAP-stabbing, and get irrationally angry and degrade the thread. Then we get a wave of people complaining about the first group (I'm including myself in this group), which is also not very productive. We need both of these waves to stop so that we can calmly discuss our options. Generally speaking, if you can't discuss the diplo situation without getting angry or promoting conspiracy theories constantly, you probably should just steer clear of that thread and focus your energy on the tactical stuff. I'd like that thread to be focused on one thing: Getting the dogpile to crack. We've seen a bunch of games here where dogpiles failed, and it's usually because the dogpilers cracked in one way or another. Solving that problem is a lot more productive than

General Etiquette

This is mainly aimed at people in defined roles - stop being jerks to people who are not in defined roles, even if you think their ideas are lousy. That freezes them out. I aim this at myself too of course, but we've been slowly squelching discussion. I think we have a lot of discussion over bad ideas, but I think the solution to this is guiding the discussion more carefully rather than killing it.

For those not involved in defined roles - please do pay attention and keep updated on what's going on, and if some things are not being covered adequately, feel free to speak up and say so. It can be a little discouraging to people in defined roles when they do something, and then someone who clearly isn't paying close enough attention criticizes them ignorantly.

I would love to get more input on what you all think would make things run more smoothly. I know of several people who have quit following the game due to frustration with how things are run, and I really don't want that "brain drain" to continue. I've really enjoyed this game and us all working together, and it would be sad to see things crash and burn, especially now that we're facing a bit of adversity.

  Roads from islands
Posted by: I like Serena - August 6th, 2013, 11:27 - Forum: Master of Magic - Replies (17)

Inspired by the work on roads in the wikia, I started a new game to see if I could play on islands without using any ships.

Here's my challenge.

[Image: road_from_island1.png][Image: road_from_island2.png]

From my starting island I was able to open a tower coming out on a very small island in arcanus.
And yes, land is in sight and I do have the space to build the right road in myrran.
Except that I haven't been able to.

I have endurance, word of recall, and plane shift.
As yet I do not have waterwalking, flying, or windwalking.

I've tried to start from the tower and switch.
I've tried to start one tile before the tower and try to switch when the engineers passed the tower.
I've tried to cast plane shift just when they were passing the tower.
All to no avail.
My next try will be to recall to the new village on the island (which is not a hamlet yet).

Can it be done?
