Gnosia: Werewolf the Single Player RPG
Posted by: Herman Gigglethorpe - June 12th, 2022, 11:28 - Forum: The Gaming Table - Replies (71)

Gnosia Loop 1

Gnosia is a Japanese adventure game or "visual novel" based on everyone's favorite social game Werewolf.  Shapeshifting aliens called Gnosia are murdering humans aboard a spaceship, and it's your job to warn the crew about who's suspicious.  Or lie to them if you happen to be scum.

One difference between Gnosia and Werewolf is that you level up and can distribute stat points.  An explanation according to the character creation menu:

Charisma-"Increases the influential power of your comments, making others more likely to agree and follow your lead".

Intuition-"Allows you to pick up on other people's lies and suspicious behavior".

Logic-"Makes it easier for you to convince others that you're right".

Charm-"Makes you more amicable, and thus less likely to be selected for cold sleep".

Performance-"Makes you a better liar, and helps you to more efficiently get your point across".

Stealth-"Makes it harder for others to pick up on your malicious intent, and makes the Gnosia less likely to target you".

I wanted the wolfiest character possible, so I made a man named JACOB with the Black symbol, and put all 5 starting points into Performance.  WAGNER was another potential choice:  Wagner the Werewolf is unintentionally funny if you can tolerate florid prose.

The backstory scrolled too quickly for me to catch, but I took some photos on Switch to look at it.  "Cold sleep" is the preferred method of getting rid of Gnosia to avoid unnecessary casualties from "military suppression".  "Schrimpf transfer" is the equivalent of warp speed, and can't be used without containing all Gnosia, or else the ship will self-destruct to prevent them from spreading to other star systems.

A woman named Setsu awakened JACOB.  He told her "I don't get it" when asked about the briefing.  He was suffering from amnesia like all good RPG characters as an excuse for a tutorial.  Setsu asked him a question that would have outed her as Gnosia immediately if it weren't so blunt:  "JACOB.  Do you believe that mankind should be wiped out from the universe?"

You're thinking "WHO WOULD SAY YES?", but I've seen questions that bad on job applications.  Some employers will ask if you think stealing from their store is acceptable.  When JACOB said "I don't think so", Setsu warned him that one of the next three people he would meet was Gnosia.

Raqio believed JACOB was a Gnosia pretending to be an amnesiac.  "Hah, you tried your best to pose as human, but to no avail".  Setsu defended JACOB by saying "Amnesia at a time like this is too suspicious, and brings unwanted attention.  Do you really think a predator would try something like that?"  No known Gnosia had tried the amnesia bluff either.

Gina agreed with Setsu, but SQ had the most questionable dialogue yet:  "Uh-oh, hey-we're outta time!  Well, we have like, no idea who the Gnosia are anyway.  Let's just hurry up and get the voting done!"  JACOB voted for SQ due to her evasive speech, Raqio voted for JACOB, and everyone else sent Raqio to Cold Sleep.

Raqio's response to being sent to Cold Sleep:  "Once the warp has finished, the Gnosia will have killed someone, and you'll realize I was innocent.  You're basically giving the Gnosia carte blanche".  SQ retorted in her usual Valley Girl manner:  "OMG Raqio, you're like, such a whiner.  Let's just hurry up and start the freeze".

LeVi the ship's AI instructed JACOB about the equivalent of the Night phase.  Passengers are rendered unconscious during warp speed transit for their safety:  the perfect time for the Gnosia to commit murder.  SQ forced herself into JACOB's room and tried to flirt with him by alluding to "that night".

Logic has another use besides what the character creation screen tells you:  it lets you view more of the Backlog.  JACOB couldn't remember anything before the start of the SQ conversation.

SQ commented on how nice Setsu was to JACOB, then suggested "OH-EM-GEE. . .What if Setsu was like, totally Gnosia?"  SQ wanted to spend the night with JACOB, and probably not to ogle his abs.  LeVi saved his life with some space protocol:  "Anti-Gnosia procedures do not allow that.  SQ, please return to your room".

Setsu realized on Day 2 that Raqio was innocent, and Gina had been killed on Night 1.  Gina wasn't just dead, but "erased from this universe".  The only suspects were Setsu and SQ.

What followed was a basic conversation system with Doubt and Cover options.  JACOB used most of his 5 turns to Doubt SQ, and Setsu eagerly agreed.  SQ's only attempt at an alibi was "Um, excuse me?  But Setsu is so quiet and like, super sketch?"

After SQ was sentenced to Cold Sleep, she confessed her identity:  "Whaaaaat. . .I totally thought that was gonna work!"  Setsu handed JACOB a Data Reference so he could look at crew data and comment logs.  JACOB earned 385 EXP for winning Loop 1, only to be sent to Loop 2 for a new iteration of Gnosia. . .

It's likely that SQ is the culprit in Loop 1 every time, since she's the character on the cover.

Heart Chaos vs Chaos
Posted by: Artorius - June 7th, 2022, 15:24 - Forum: Master of Magic - Replies (1)

Imagine you are playing a multiplayer game. It's a fairly small map. You are a red wizard and have become friendly with a purple and a blue wizard. There's a white and green wizard too, although you don't know them as well, and aren't sure if you can trust them.

You have only a few spells like warp wood and fireball. The raiders and monsters haven't been kind to you. You only have a few scarcely-upgraded settlements, with little to no army still standing, no treasuries, and only a small income. But you have finally secured the area, and monsters and raiders are no longer an issue.

Suddenly, you encounter a much more powerful chaos wizard. He appears to have more casting skill, mana, and spells than you. His power threatens not just you, but all of Arcanus. Fortunately, he, like you, doesn't have many developed cities. And while his magic is strong, his army is small, seemingly consisting entirely of fantastical chaos creatures like hellhounds and gargoyles.

Now, you could hunker down and invest in your towns, or a single town, to try to play a long game, building a conventional army. Or you could go on the local offensive and try to secure a nearby node or two in preparation for a magic-based offensive against the chaos wizard in the medium term. It's also of course your call whether to invest your spell power into research, building skill, or building mana reserves. But, in the back of your mind, you know the chaos wizard is targeting you and you alone, and he only grows stronger. You know you must strike before he does.

Giving yourself liberties for a poetic outcome, how would you defeat the chaos wizard?

  Windows 11

I don't know if this will be useful to anyone, but I thought I should share it. My desktop computer kept flagging me that it couldn't be upgraded to Windows 11 because of a Secure Boot problem. I read up and tried changing the boot mode in the BIOS from Legacy to UEFI for my SSD. The computer wouldn't boot, and I had to switch it back to legacy mode. My SSD is only a couple years old, and I couldn't understand why it had to be a legacy device.

After considerably more research, I stumbled on the MBR2GPT program, which is built into Windows 10. All I had to do was open a command line prompt, type "MBR2GPT /VERIFY" and "MBR2GPT /CONVERT". It took about a minute, no reformatting or reinstallation required. The program warned me that I'd have to change my BIOS settings, but it was already changed: either the MBR2GPT program changed the BIOS setting, or the BIOS itself was smart enough to change to UEFI.

Now Windows is happy and wants to upgrade me to Windows 11. I'll probably wait a bit for them to iron out some bugs first, but that was such a painless solution that I thought it might help someone else.

It's baseball season. I just listened to my university team advance to the next round of the NCAA baseball tournament. Hense the baseball analogy.

I'm just going to do my best not to boot the ball when it is hit my way.

I don't recall that the old buggy 1.31 ever generated lairs like this. Maybe I don't remember... : ) But new Com. Pat. feature or not this is pretty amazingly crowded. Well it is a small land choice, that probably helped. Heh. Haven't tried Tiny, I imagine it's even crazier. No room to settle until you clear some perhaps!

  [Sucksatciv] First time playing Pitboss
Posted by: sucksatciv - June 5th, 2022, 17:28 - Forum: Pitboss 65 - Replies (81)

Hello lurkers, I've never played pitboss before, so I don't know what my plan is for this game. If it's available, I'd like to choose a hunting mining civ since it is pretty flexible, although I have no idea what the meta is for this game or what settings we are playing on. Anyways, I'm going to try to build as many cities as possible early and claim a lot of territory, then I'll spam cottages everywhere, and maybe try for a great scientist. That's as much as I've thought of so far.

This version is what introduced me to the song. Old song and lots of versions with different titles. For those who read my PB63 thread with some minor commentary on the hardships / history involved, I urge ya'll to listen deeper.

I've been meaning to do more historical shanties think this is the pitboss. Mind you the version you're listening to is very modernized lol . I'll see how many versions I can find.
