Anyone have a longer thematic cityname list yet?
Posted by: Intaka - November 8th, 2021, 05:44 - Forum: Caster of Magic for Windows (CoM II) - Replies (8)

Version 1.3 is out and it supports a longer list of city names for each race. Anyone have a giant list of city names they've generated yet?

Inconsequntial question on the Realism Invictus AI
Posted by: Fluffball - October 28th, 2021, 22:02 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (98)

I LOVE the RI mod, and have played it exclusively for I think a couple years. It take BTS and makes everything about it better to the point I can't ever see myself playing a regular civ4 game again.

One of the things I love about it is how good the AI is. I've seen it conduct LARGE scale naval invasions: I'm talking about on the Earth map Japan who only has room for 2 or 3 cities consistently forming a colonial empire conquering much of SE and E Asia. I once saw the Indonesian civ invade the Incas. They're REALLY good at it. Hell I've seen barbarians land large naval invasions in my backlines.

And even in the game I'm currently playing I'm being out-teched on noble difficulty by TWO AIs despite a commanding lead over both. Their military strength is roughly equal to mine. I'll easily win due to larger size, but they're beating me to every key wonder and it's crazy.

Note, I pretty much always turn off the scaling rules in RI, so the more cities I have my tech does NOT slow, the more military I have my production does NOT slow, etc. I understand the point of them in the RI setting, I just don't find them fun.

Anywho, on to the question, why the heck is the AI so good?

I know one of the best things RI does is nerf all the stupid exploitish stuff like making slavery the god civic, making financial the best trait, and etc etc, but still, the AI plays REALLY well.

WHY? What is so different from the base civ4 AI that makes it so much more competent. Can any of you understand the code well enough to understand why the AI is SO much better than BTS?

Edit: I know a lot of it is just removing cheesey tactics like slavery whipping and 6 strength catapults causing collateral damage to modern armor or whatever, but still, it's crazy.

Brick Wonderboy in Monster Land fan remake/expanded game
Posted by: Blake00 - October 27th, 2021, 03:15 - Forum: The Gaming Table - Replies (2)

In recent years we've had official remakes of Wonder Boy 1, 3 and now we've got the new WB6 (Monster World 4) one but sadly there still hasn't been one for my personal favourite Wonder Boy 2 in Monster Land! Yes I know some of the others were more feature packed but for purely nostalgic reasons WB2 is my favourite as it was the first RPG like game I ever played and owned. I still hum its music to this day after like nearly 30 years lol! When I started re-collecting Sega Master System games a few years ago it was the first one I bought.

So while there's no official remake of Wonder Boy in Monster Land, I've recently discovered the awesome news that someone over at the SMS power forums is doing a fan remake and expansion of the game calling it 'Monsterland Meka', looks like it also includes stuff from WB1 (skateboard) and WB5 (player home) too. It's early days so far but I love the backgrounds! Entire valleys of grass, flowers, forests, & rivers surrounded by mountains. Love the music remasters too! The 3D main character appearance and animation leave a lot to be desired though lol, but its creator Immo has told me that it's just a placeholder until proper 2D animating art work is drawn over the top of it (similar to some of the 2D snake baddies already done).

There's a gazillion pictures on his website but here's some of my favourites:

  New tiny Always War Game?
Posted by: Cornflakes - October 25th, 2021, 14:38 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (16)

Any interest in a new small always war game? Essentially the idea is to replicate the PB50 setup:

- ChH mod (latest version)
- 4 players
- sequential PB
- Turn order determined by play window/timezone. Once the play order is established, Player #1 will be randomly rolled.
- 3-round snake pick. You can chose starting location, leader, or civ in any order as you see fit. Pick order to be 432143211234 (give last player first pick).
- start with settler, scout, and CG1/2/3 archer (or UU replacement) to prevent warrior rushes. Settle in place required and starting archer must remain within your cultural borders (but may move from the city tile, e.g. to prevent scout chokes).
- always war

- Difficulty: Monarch
- Speed: Normal
- Era: Ancient
- Spies: Allowed
- No tribal villages
- No barbs

Signups:
1. Cornflakes [6-8 am eastern time US]
2. Fabled
3. Bing
4.

Map: Proposed to re-use the PB50 "Australia" map, screenshot below. Link to additional map screenshots from the PB50 setup thread: https://www.realmsbeyond.net/forums/show...#pid724804

A suggestion about high book plays
Posted by: Anskiy - October 22nd, 2021, 19:02 - Forum: Caster of Magic for Windows (CoM II) - Replies (3)

I've been wondering for a while why high book plays are generally still bad in CoM. I think part of it is maybe because there's still a TON of cruft in Rare and Very Rare tier spells, so picking more books to guarantee more spells in the higher tiers, which is supposed to be an advantage in the late game, doesn't really work out, since you still have to randomly blow research on garbage or mediocre spells that won't get used. Perhaps it might be interesting to see how a system with less numerous but more impactful Rare and Very Rare spells would work out. What do you all think?

  Vanilla Units mod
Posted by: Anskiy - October 10th, 2021, 04:12 - Forum: Caster of Magic for Windows (CoM II) - Replies (3)

Have you ever wondered how CoM 2 would play like if it had vanilla units, but the spells and AI of CoM? Look no further! This mod changes all the units to be as similar to vanilla as possible, down to their availability and cost. Get it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IrXqs4k...sp=sharing

Installation instructions:

1. Backup your CoM 2 folder(called "Master of Magic Caster Windows").
2. Unzip the contents of the download to the CoM 2 folder. Select "Yes to All" when asked for overwriting files.
3. Enter the folder and delete spells.dat and units.dat.
4. Play the game!

If you want to uninstall, copy over the contents of your CoM 2 backup to the CoM 2 folder, and delete spells.dat and units.dat before running the game.

Video Civ Video Series Ep 01 - Civilization 1 HD Tour With Mods & Scenarios
Posted by: Blake00 - October 2nd, 2021, 06:45 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (4)

Civilization Genre HD Video Series:
Welcome to the first episode in a huge video series years in the making where I show you how to play each classic Civilization genre game (including spinoffs) in 1080p HD, while showing off some of their best scenarios and mods along with their interesting and sometimes very different console conversions, plus also trying to play as the Barbarians in each game too. Naturally this first main episode is about Sid Meier's Civilization 1! smile Later in the series I'll also be looking at fan games and naturally at some point I'll get to the more modern Civ games that don't require any tricks to play in HD and will still tribute them too of course! In many cases there's simply too much to cover in one main episode so I'll also be making special extra bonus episodes to compliment the main episodes in the series, so stay tuned!

Main Episode 01 - Civilization 1 HD Tour:
Main video on playing Civ1 in HD with mods & scenarios:

Years in the making this is a huge video tour showcasing Sid Meier's Civilization 1 in HD using CivWin (NOT CivNet) in a virtual machine with some of its best mods and scenarios. This is the first main episode in a huge series showing people how you can play classic Civilization genre games in HD on modern systems with some of the best enhancement mods out there. I try to show off some of the best fan made scenarios too (yes, there were scenarios for Civ1!), along with some lesser known console conversions, and I also show you how to play as the normally unplayable Barbarians 8th Civilization slot.

Video Notes:
  • If everything looks too small then you're probably viewing this video on a small screen or phone. Unfortunately Civ1 has no built in zoom controls so if you want things to be bigger then lower the Windows XP resolution inside the Virtual Machine and the game will resize to fit.
  • If it feels a bit choppy and slightly schizophrenic that's because '3 different Blakes' worked on it haha! Basically I made the video in 2018, then came back to it in 2019 and added lots of stuff, and then came back to it again in 2021 and deleted a bunch of stuff & added even more new stuff lol! I tried to intermix and smooth out the transitions between old and new footage as best as I could so hopefully it's not too bad.
  • Just to reiterate as there's still been some confusion. This video and these mods are about CivWin (Civilization for Windows), not CivDOS, and not CivNet. While CivNet appears very similar to CivWin it is NOT identical and these mods & scenarios are NOT compatible with it.

  Terraforming Mars
Posted by: T-hawk - September 30th, 2021, 12:45 - Forum: The Gaming Table - Replies (1)

Terraforming Mars, the board game, has come up here and there around RB a few times. I've played it quite a bit in various configurations (over the board, online, solo, expansions), and wrote a thing about it:

I'm not trying to explain the game to those who don't know it, but if you do and you like how I write about games, you'll like this. smile

  Domination Rate
Posted by: Fringe - September 28th, 2021, 15:17 - Forum: Caster of Magic for Windows (CoM II) - Replies (1)

Hi all,
I finally switched over to COM II and have really been enjoying it -- and getting used to some changes. Waiting for the next version to be available publicly before bringing up some things but I saw mention in the Bug Report thread of "Domination Rate'". My first reaction was "what IS this Familiar window?!" -- I hadn't thought to scroll down the Info box to find any of the options beyond Mirror. Neat!

How does it work? Is there a number you need to get to in order to win outright?

I searched the COM PDF but didn't find anything. Searching the forums, I found the one thread, Bug Reports. It's 166 PAGES long, which is nuts and you all are awesome. When I searched for posts instead of threads, only the very recent question about it was found. So asking here in a way it can be found by future forum searchers.

  Proposed Changelog for 3.x
Posted by: Charriu - September 27th, 2021, 05:00 - Forum: Close to Home Mod - Replies (5)

As a base of discussion I want to provide you all the changes here that I plan to do and that I am very confident about. This doesn't mean that we don't have to discuss, rather that there already was some discussion about these changes and I am willing to make them. I will keep this thread closed and direct the discussion to other threads. This thread is mainly to make the upcoming changes more transparent.
