Types of spam

This section needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (March 2011)
Forum spambots surf the web, looking for guestbooks, wikis, blogs, forums and any other web forms to submit spam links to. These spambots often use OCR technology to bypass CAPTCHAs present. Some spam messages are targeted towards readers and can involve techniques of target marketing or even phishing, making it hard to tell real posts from the bot generated ones. Not all of the spam posts are meant for the readers; some spam messages are simply hyperlinks intended to boost search engine ranking.
Most forum spam consists of links to external sites, with the dual goals of increasing search engine visibility in highly competitive areas such as weight loss, pharmaceuticals, gambling, pornography, real estate or loans, and generating more traffic for these commercial websites. Some of these links contain code to track the spambot's identity if a sale goes through, when the spammer behind the spambot works on commission.
Spam posts may contain anything from a single link, to dozens of links. Text content is minimal, usually innocuous and unrelated to the forum's topic, or in a very old thread that is revived by the spammer solely for the purpose of spamming links. Some text is included to prevent the post being caught by automated spam filters that prevent posts which consist solely of external links from being submitted. Full banner advertisements have also been reported.[by whom?]
Alternatively, the spam links are posted in the user's signature, in which case the spambot will never post. The link sits quietly in the signature field, where it is more likely to be harvested by search engine spiders than discovered by forum administrators and moderators.
Since November 2006, a very destructive forum and wiki spam attack has been propagated by inserting into comments redirect domains with an automated posting script like XRumer. These domains redirect a user to pornographic websites. If a user clicks on the image or attempts to close the Website an ActiveX codec will be downloaded as a Zlob Trojan. The spambot can often bypass many of the safeguards administrators use to reduce the amount of spam posted.

  Top Tier picks
Posted by: Yell0w - March 7th, 2012, 15:15 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (29)

Hej, I searched the forum but I didn't find any threads regarding this topic. So I hope you can help me:

I'd like to know what the top tier picks are (restricted leaders) and why!

I guess most top tier picks work with a single strategy very well, what is that strategy?

EDIT:

I forgot to mention that this is regarding FFH2 and EitB

  [SPOILERS] Mapmaking discussion
Posted by: Mardoc - March 7th, 2012, 13:57 - Forum: Fall From Heaven II PBEM XX - Replies (38)

In the beginning, the Earth was without form, and void.
But the Sun shone upon the sleeping Earth and deep inside the brittle crust massive forces waited to be unleashed.
The seas parted and great continents were formed. The continents shifted, mountains arose. Earthquakes spawned massive tidal waves. Volcanoes erupted and spewed forth fiery lava and charged the atmosphere with strange gases.
Into this swirling maelstrom of Fire and Air and Water the first stirrings of Life appeared: tiny organisms, cells, and amoeba, clinging to tiny sheltered habitats.
But the seeds of Life grew, and strengthened, and spread, and diversified, and prospered, and soon every continent and climate teemed with Life.
And with Life came instinct, and specialization, natural selection, Reptiles, Dinosaurs, and Mammals and finally there evolved a species known as Man and there appeared the first faint glimmers of Intelligence.
The fruits of intelligence were many: fire, tools, and weapons, the hunt, farming, and the sharing of food, the family, the village, and the tribe. Now it required but one more ingredient: a great Leader to unite the quarreling tribes to harness the power of the land to build a legacy that would stand the test of time:
a CIVILIZATION!

  Adventure 51 - Hannibal's Own Medicine - CLOSING DAY
Posted by: Ceiliazul - March 5th, 2012, 21:18 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (51)

Hannibal is under attack!
In this custom map from Plako, it's Hannibal's turn to defend the mountain passes. Always war against 4 Monarch AIs, and the only way out is conquest!

Scoring:

 • Fastest Victory: 10,7,3,1 (1st-4th date of conquest).
 • Most Elite Unit: 5,3,1 (1st-3rd most XP on one unit)
 • 3pt for earliest Great General
 • 1pt for completing Stonehenge
 • 1pt for completing Eiffel Tower
 • 2pt for using a Nuke
 • 3pt for killing the last defender with a gunship
Reporting Deadline: April 16, 2012

Game Settings:
 • Monarch Difficulty
 • Normal Speed
 • No barbs/huts/random events
 • Unrestricted Leaders
 • No Tech Trading
 • Always War
 • No Vassal States
 • Conquest Victory only
 • Statue of Zeus disabled

Player Rules:
 • Cannot enter enemy culture until 1000BC
 • Spoiler info from PBEM31 allowed except lurker thread

Notes:
This map was created for PBEM31, and there is lots of ancient-era map knowledge in the reporting threads there. The game ended early, with much of this excellent map unexplored. Stay out of the lurker thread until after you play!

The monarch difficulty may be on the easy side, especially with tech trading turned off. I expect some early finishes, and some VERY elite units on reporting day. Also, this save was created in bug mod, but will work without it. Since this is a somewhat pre-used map, I don't expect any whining about shadow reports. Do your best, and have fun.

Edit: Stripped of BUG mod per T-Hawk request

Edit: RESULTS AND REVIEW POSTED

Rules

1. Fixed length days. Each day corresponds to a certain era: Classical, Medieval, Renaissance, Industrial, and day 5 onwards are Modern. The Classical and Medieval eras correspond to 72 hour days. All other eras have 48 hour days. Nights are 24 hours.
2. Roles were initially assigned according to civilization flavour, then balanced based on the randomly assigned alignments.
3. During the day each player may cast one vote for someone to be dogpiled.
4. Votes must be posted in red or they will not count.
5. The player with most lynch votes at the end of the day is dogpiled and eliminated from the game. In the event that two or more players are tied for the most votes, everyone has been assigned a large, random, hidden Military Strength number. The player who has the largest total military strength voting for them will be eliminated. In the (extremely) unlikely event that there's a tie in the totals, both players will be eliminated.
6. Night actions have been pre-assigned a priority order that seems sensible to the GM and will be processed in that order.
7. Dead players may make one posthumous post that doesn't contribute to discussion.
8. Forum profile camping is not allowed.
9. Anyone failing to vote for 2 consecutive game days will be mod killed and removed from the game with a loss.
10. To prevent confusion that may arise in the case of cross posting, posts may not be edited.
11. Breaking the rules will result in penalties ranging from warnings to being mod killed depending on the severity of the infraction.
12. Players may not communicate with other players about the game outside the thread via PM, email, chat etc. unless told otherwise.
13. Players must check their PMs each game day before posting.
14a. The Civilized World (13/17) wins when all members of the NAP of Evil are eliminated and at least one member of the Civilized World remains.
14b. The NAP of Evil (4/17) wins if they make up 50% or more of remaining players at the end of a phase.
14c. If all players are simultaneously eliminated, the game is a draw.
