This was my first Realms Beyond game, and my first attempt at writing up a report. Very enjoyable, and the process of trying to write the report has already highlighted many areas for improvement.
Eventually managed a Space Race win in 1998 well ahead of the leading AI (Huayna), despite what I think was a less than stellar performance.
The first parts of the report can be found here, I should have the rest up during the day tomorrow - real life seems to have got in the way all of a sudden.
For countless years service to 'a dumb old heart-breaking game' you are offered the chance to relive the old way to go beyond.
To celebrate D's 10th birthday, Attika and myself, with the much appreciated help of the DSF admin, are hosting a Diablo 1 Ironman tournament over the northern summer, using a rule system based largely upon Nystul's "lock in" ruleset.
We are hoping to attract a decent amount of attention and hopefully draw a bunch of old and current players together for the occassion. All the information needed is found off the main page at the DSF http://p205.ezboard.com/bthedsfcommunity and the 4 forums towards the bottom of the page are where we direct your attention. Be sure to read through the rules forum, as it is a more challenging ruleset from the standard relaxed fit style ironman.
I do hope some of you can get together and join us, the forge did so much for Ironman and so it would be great to get RB representation, especially from the old forge regulars. You have had a trip down memory lane with a post here a month or so ago, now it's time to go back and experience it all again .
Summary: Started with a religion, loosing alot of ground in the early game which I think was a mistake. After conquering Saladin (which took quite long) I thought I had won the game, but Mao managed to stay ahead in Tech until almost the end. I also didn't realise that I'd need Apollo to start building parts, which almost cost me the game. In the end, I launched in 1989 when Mao needed two more parts
The report is rather chaotic right now because I wrote it as I went along, but I'm very busy at the moment so it'll be a few days before I can clean it. You can find it here as a webpage or here as OpenDocument (OOo 2.0, KOffice, etc.). Both versions are about 1.8 MB including the pictures at on average about 90k.
Founded at starting spot settled my half of the island (border to saladin was ~ 7 tiles west of berlin); Despite terrible luck witnh my scouts (the first died in 3600BC) I got 3 techs from huts(Wheel, Masonry, Priesthood). Founded Jewism. Built Pyramids, Great Lib, Colossus, Statue of Liberty and 3-gorges-damm. Got to Liberalism first.
Lost to Mao who launched at 1986 with me 2 parts short (~10 turns to go)
Had 2 small early wars to get rid of a Spanish and a Arabian City on the north coast (just above Berlin).
3 turns before the end Saladin declared War but his intruding Units were easily wiped.
Main Reason I lost: I deliberately stayed in Mercantilism and consequently signed no OB-agreements. I underestimated the handicap and played not well enough to overcome it, resulting in my very first prince-loss.
But I now know why Tokugawa is usually the worst AI . Edit: I popped 1 silver during the game while on Mao's island Alu existed (IIRC in Maos Territory but I'm not sure about that)
Now that the patch is out, I have finally been able to post two solo games I played on 1.61 pre-release. I thought I'd post an announcement here in our forums, not because I'm trying to promote my website, but because I know a lot of people will likely enjoy reading through them. Enjoy taking a look at Emperor Metalman and Cathy's Romp.
This was a rather rushed game. Also pretty uneventful for most of the time.
Therefore only limited notes and screenshots available.
Nevertheless, here is a little report on my game: http://www.schumacherswelt.de/realmsbeyo...rmless.htm
Abstract:
War delayed space ship launch in 1970.
I was very weak on the wonder building side of things.
Also did a few moves and decisions.
But all in all a fun game. Interesting challenge.
Also, on a side note: Not a single strategic resource Popped Another One in this game. And that seemed to be affecting overall world politics a lot, judging from other report.
Sorry for the bad reporting style, I will try to do better on the Epic2!
Comments welcome
This is the first time, I try to report one of my civ4 games, in fact it´s my fifth or sixth game played. Most of the things I know about civ 4, I learnt in this forum, where the excellent reports of Sulla, Sirius, Kylearan, Uberfish, Speaker and others helped me to improve my game. Thx a lot!! At the moment I think, I have two major weaknesses in may game: late game strategy and my handling of the combat engineâ¦..You will realize this later on⦠Besides i have some problems with the attachments in this forum....i apologize for the bad quality of my screenshots (but uploads of higher quality dont seem to be allowed....)
The start position of adventure 5. My settler can obviously found a city which has awesome potential: Pigs, Corn, Gold and Silk. I play as Frederik the German, who is creative (2 extra culture points per city and round) and philosophical (100% great persons points(GPP)). Thus a mental note is made: The Pantheon (another 50% GPP) is one of the early wonders , I will try to get whenever possible.
Berlin is founded at the start position and my scout flips a coin to decide to which side he wants to go first Leftie wins so I turn to the west J.
I got extremely lucky with my first 2 huts getting 2 techs: wheel and masonry. Wow, normally, I am not such lucky guy . I detect Saladin early and see that he is in the pole position to settle in the west. My scout tries to move very carefully to avoid contact with lions and bears Utilizing trees, jungle and his extra move he returns to Berlin ready for further duty. In Berlin I decide to train a warrior first, which needs 15 rounds, let the city grow to level 3 and start a worker then. As I´m not spiritual, I donât aim for one of the early religions, but start with Animal husbandry and Agriculture. My worker should have something to do, when he is finally trained J. I emphasize growth in Berlin at the beginning. Everything goes smoothly and my worker is ready to work in 3000 BC, after which I start my first settler. My warrior and my scout have begun to scout the east in the mean time.
Finally, my scout becomes a bit careless, but he survives the fight with the bear, but only barely:
yeah right, there I am, waiting for the new patch for weeks, then finally a new Adventure starts that ends when the patch will be out. I think, sure, that'll probably take some more weeks, and go on vacation for some days after I had played half the game. And what do I see when I come back Monday evening? It's report day already!
So I hurry to finish the game, paying a lot less attention to details than I had wanted to, and make it in time. Space victory in 1882AD.
I will post some kind of report during the next days. I had planned to make an unusual report about this game, but seeing that Epic 2 has started already, I think I will do this for a later Epic/Adventure and do only a brief summary for this one.
