Alone....I'm so alone...
Posted by: Gotag - January 20th, 2006, 10:01 - Forum: Civilization General Discussion - Replies (3)

Heya all and it's good to see such activity!!

Been playing some CivIV since christmas (gotta love a wife who buys you Civ!!!) and after a few games at Prince and lower to learn the mechanics I've done a few runs on Monarch with mixed results.

Playing as the chinese (Kubli) I scratched and fought my way to a space race victory and that was all well and good. Started on a conti with 4 others.

However the PRNG was somewhat odd with the other three. In each I started alone on a fair size chunk of land and despite my best efforts I got completely smoked... (One with Freddy I must admit was a great game but my opening was intended to be aggressive and when forced to switch tracks I had lost too much time)

In all the games I survived and finished middle of the pack but by the time of first contact (always the AI meeting me, getting to optics by oneself is a damn slow process) I was hugely behind tech wise despite often being the largest Civ with a decent eco. Is this to be expected? The inability to trade techs with anyone seems a mammoth handicap. In addition the inability to trade anything but tech for tech (from a practical standpoint) seems somewhat limiting especially from the POV of staging a comeback.

Loving the game so far. Kudos to Sullla and Sirian for their contributions to a great game!!

Sweet gaming moment......

My third game of CivIV. Prince diff and I was playing as Washington. Default size and settings. I was on a Conti with Ceaser and Cath. I was researching mil trad for Cav and in anticipation was stocking up on cash and Knights to go beat on Rome. (He had twice chosen unwisely) I had no horses (Cath had 3!! and was pleased with me) and was trading a couple of Luxes to her for them. The instant I dinged the tech she dialed me up and cancelled the trade and her price for them was prohibitive. I sat back and thought... damn......DAMN!!!!! My whole plan up in smoke. The realization that the AI would realise the danger and cut me off was great!!

It was a pity that when I asked for them out of friendship she immediately agreed. Rome was gone and when she out of the blue attacked me (guess she was concerned about my size because we were great friends at that point) she was gone soon after.

Still though, that few seconds after she cancelled the horses was a sweet gaming moment. I almost got mad at an AI!!

  FACTIONS PREVIEW
Posted by: Seijin - January 19th, 2006, 17:25 - Forum: Guild Wars - Replies (1)

Okay, I just ended up DL'ing for a long ass time the new Factions stuff they put up. Man, seeing the new login screen itself makes me want to make sure and buy the new chapter when it comes out, its so purty.

Anyways, there's group stuff to do it appears and some play against AI opponents in PvP type settings I think. So, HIT ME UP when you get in game if I'm on and we can go explore together!!!!! Don't be shy, I'm shy, so that won't help if YOU'RE shy too. I can be an ass sometimes, but who isn't?!?!?!????!? =p

Actually i think I'm pretty nice....who agrees? Seriously though, i do want to check this out with guildies since I know most, if not all, of the RBer's like to explore thoroughly.

  Realms Beyond Dreams [RBD]
Posted by: Lurker Wyrm - January 18th, 2006, 16:57 - Forum: Guild Wars - Replies (23)

Ok, so here's my proposal:

The current guild would stay the same as it always has been, relaxed and easy-going. However, a group of 8 of us would split off from the regular guild and become a PvP focused group with regularly scheduled PvP events competing on both the ladder and in the Tomb of Primeval Kings. We would still get together with the main guild for events and casual get togethers, but the scheduled PvP would take priority.

This would mean that we would be doing GvG/HoH at least 4 of the 7 days of the week. We could take weekends off if we so choose, or have another day or two where we wouldn't have the obligation to sign on (really, everyone needs a break every now and then, I don't think any of us want to play on a War Machine schedule).

I've already got a good chunk of the guild members on my friends list, so staying in touch really shouldn't be a problem, and with guest guild memberships available and guild alliances on the way it should be even less of an issue.

Ok, now that all of the introductory stuff is over and I've alleviated everyone's fears of the guild falling into ruin due to a split, let me get on with the actual proposal.

The new guild would be called "Realms Beyond Dreams" with the tag [RBD]. Now, I've had a bit of inspiration about the cape and hall of choice. The first choice would be to simply use the same cape and hall of the main guild, but really, that'd be boring. Alternatively, we could embrace the yin-yang emblem on our capes and run with it. What this means is we would have a Black background with a Gold emblem (black and white are opposites, silver and gold are close enough). I did a bit of a mockup at the guild emblemer, so here's Remy modelling the thought (I'll put a lot more effort into the real thing, I promise):
For our guild hall, we could use Nomad's Isle, the desert one or Burning Isle, the lava one. Both are pretty opposite to the current Frozen Isle. Nomad's Isle seems more so to me (sea of ice vs. sea of sand, same, yet completely different).

I know the biggest "wedge in the gears" for this has been the fact that, as it stands, we're pretty unorganized and uncoordinated for PvP. That's also one of the reasons I think we need to do something like this. As it currently stands, we don't have any set times for PvP because there are too many conflicts of when people will be signed on or not, and whether they actually want to PvP at the time. This is where having a core group comes in handy.

First off, instead of trying to balance the schedules of the entire guild, we would only have the 8 of us to worry about, which is a lot easier. Secondly, with just us 8, we would start working as a team a lot faster since we'd have the same people all the time rather than having groups of different people who could potentially be working together for the first time ever.

Possible times to meet (first draft, all times EST):
MWFSa 1-4 PM
TR 10AM - 1PM, SaS 2-5PM
MTWRF 2AM - 5AM

Or we can do a mish-mash of those to get something that's convenient for everyone. Those are all just first random thoughts that currently work for me and won't interfere with my schedule next semester (as it stands). I tried to use times that were sort of "middle road," which wouldn't be too early or late for others. In other words, I didn't suggest something like 11PM or midnight on a weekday because that would pretty much rule out GG right there (making him get up at 5-6AM would be unfair, unless it's something he really didn't mind doing. I feel less guilty making the west coast people get up at 10AM). I don't have AM classes this semester, so I don't mind staying up late, although I can imagine other EST people probably would.

Now, on to the unpleasantries (aka requirements):
- You would have to commit at least 1-3 hours a day while we're in competition, at least 4 days out of the week (exact times TBA). The exact times we meet can be worked around with, so don't let being in an awkward time zone discourage you from doing this.

- Using a form of voice communication would be required. There's way too much stuff going on and trying to coordinate without it just won't work. There would also have to be rules for using the server (i.e. no casual chatter while we're in combat). I know that I've been slightly hesitant to do this since I like the anonymity normally associated w/the internet and lack of using real identities and the like, but that's just something I'll have to get over.

- We would also need to have a non-in-game way of communicating with each other in real time (aka chat). One possibility would be to use an IRC chatroom on one of the many servers that exist out there.

- Having a PvP character slot isn't required per se, but it's something that's incredibly helpful. If you've got a PvE character made that will suit your PvP self, or have the skill points needed to adapt, then feel free to use that.

- We're going to have to come up with a steady build and game plan. There are a lot we could copy to get things started, but eventually we're going to have to get our own style. This means you need to think about what skills will benefit and compliment other builds, not just that you want to bring a build that you like or that works well in PvE.

- When we do go into PvE to work with the main guild or to do unlocking/missions/whatever, henches are a thing of the past. The PvE game is so pathetically easy anyone can take a group of henches and complete the entire game start to finish (except the two pre-quests which require a partner, but those don't really count). That sort of thing makes you overestimate your abilities and when you do that, you make yourself a mediocre player. Besides, it doesn't matter how many changes are made, hench ai will always be bad and irritating.

I'd really like this to work out, so I'm willing to be pretty flexible on most of these points. Here's hoping this can work out.

Too Much OF A Good Thing?
Posted by: KingOfPain - January 18th, 2006, 13:11 - Forum: Guild Wars - Replies (14)

All my thoughts on this is still in napkin form (yes, I actually use napkins for notes) so I will just point out why this is a major concern and let you guys have a jab at it without my influence.

I fear, if AN puts out 2 new chapters per year as planned, it will break the RB community and other GW communities alike.

For sure, I will be buying chapter2, in one form or another. But looking six months (after chapter2) into the future, I am not so sure I will buy chapter3, or any chapters thereafter when I have not fully explored chapter2's contents and new professions yet.......

Even if the whole RBGW community buy all the expansions, it only helps to further decay this little group we have - knowing how hard it is to get a guild game together already. Imagine how desync'd we would be.

The one determining factor we chose to support GW over WoW is that GW has no subscription fees, which makes it easy for people who are on-and-off to be able to come back to the game and still sync and have fun with the rest of the community (barring major upgrades/expansions) - Take Diablo, for example.

I don't mean to stand in the way of progress just for our sake, however, this is not good for the future of the copmpany neither. There just won't be enough new buyers to populate all the new chapters, and most outposts in previous chapters will turn into ghost town.

I would like to hear your thoughts on this subject, especially what are the alternatives to having 2 chapters per year.

  Adventure 2 - Demented Avenger's Shadow Game
Posted by: Demented Avenger - January 18th, 2006, 10:31 - Forum: Civ4 Event Reports - Replies (6)

Unfortunately, I misunderstood what the closing day meant, and didn’t finish this game until 8 am on the 17th, so I guess I’ll report it as a shadow game. I ended up with a diplomatic victory in 1968.

4000 BC: My Aztec followers inform me that they crave venison, and who am I to deny them this simple luxury? I start immediately on a worker to fulfill their wishes.

Because of that juicy marble and my knowledge of mysticism, I decide to shoot for an early oracle. I start on meditation, with masonry and then priesthood in the research queue. Hopefully I’m first to Buddhism.

I start exploring with my scouts. I find three huts, and all three give me more scouts! A technology would be nice, but with a big map I don’t mind the extra scouting.

In 3660 BC, my people are forced to kick their venison habit as I found Buddhism in the capital. My venison stocks continue to dwindle, though, and I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of my people will be coming back as worms and insects in their next life.

In 3400 BC, I finally find a passable city site (with 2 bonus food) in this barren icescape:

This should be a production powerhouse down the road, assuming I can get a settler down here.

After discovering priesthood, I start on the oracle, and research the wheel next to hook up the marble.

After the wheel, I decide I’ll have to fight my way back to par because of this bad start, so I start on mining and head for bronze working, with the hopes of picking up iron working as my free tech. I’d prefer metal casting, but don’t have enough time to get all the prereqs before the oracle finishes.

My scouts reveal some prime real estate south of the lake:

This will be my settling priority. My next city will be on the lake to get some galleys out ASAP.

2040 BC: Learn bronze working, complete oracle, and learn iron working. Start on a settler in the capital. I start on fishing next, and will go for sailing after that. I must colonize that lake if I want to have any decent land at all.

I’m the least powerful civ (although first in score, strangely!)

By 1600 BC, all my scouts have been killed by barbarians. I found my second city in 1560 BC, and will start it on a galley when sailing completes next turn.

At this point, I’ve met Vicky, Saladin, Caesar, and Mao, and have signed open borders with Vicky and Mao.

After sailing, start on pottery.

Tenochlitan finishes its first jaguar, and starts on a settler to expand across the lake, which will be escorted by this jaguar.

In 1000 BC, the capital finishes the settler, so I whip the galley in my second city.

Because my lands are so commerce-poor, I decide to shoot for the great library (seeing as I already have marble).

I learn writing in 950 BC, and start on a library in the capital.

Much to my dismay, I find in 850 BC that the great delta site to the south has already been settled by Mao.

In 800 BC, I whip a library in my capital, and in 750 BC, I found Tlateloco on the northeastern part of the southern lake shore, the only place Mao hasn’t already taken. This will be my science city, as there is a lot of grass, a gold on a hill, and a food resource (as well as fresh water). My great scientist from the GL will build his academy here.

In 675 BC, Mao converts to Buddhism! This makes me feel a lot better about my isolated science city, as I will have a powerful ally to help me protect it.

In 450 BC, I discover the alphabet and start trading techs. I trade Mao Meditation for Agriculture, and Vicky gets alphabet for math. (I wouldn’t trade away alphabet normally, but Mansa had beat me to it already, so I didn’t have a trading monopoly).

Moses is born in the capital from the oracle’s GPP, and builds the Mahabodhi.

As of 350 BC, I am the most cultured civilization.

Mansa Musa wants iron working for monotheism. He’s enemies with Mao, so I decline. Victoria (who’s way in the lead) demands I stop trading with Mao. I decline. I’m putting a lot of my diplomatic eggs in Mao’s basket, I hope he’s a good ally later on.

I discover literature in 200 BC and start work on the great library in the capital. I also found another city (Texcoco) south of the lake, just southeast of my science city. The purpose of this city is to give me access to iron.

In 125 BC, Mao requests alphabet and I oblige him – our relations shoot from 6 to 8. Rome is my neighbor to the southwest and is the worst of my rivals, so he will be my first military target. I will have to wait until I get maces, though, if I want any chance against Caesar’s praetorians.

  Adventure 2 - Zeviz's Report
Posted by: Zeviz - January 18th, 2006, 04:18 - Forum: Civ4 Event Reports - Replies (5)

This adventure was very fun and challenging. It was my first complete Monarch game, and, considering the start, I wasn't really expecting a victory. My strategy was similar to Kylearan's, but more extreme. Instead of fighting Caesar, I expanded straight south and fought Mao. As for firestarting, I tried to make sure that both #1 and #2 AIs would always be at war with somebody other than me. Unfortunately, I've shadowed this report by forgetting to save the game when shutting it down in frustration one time and having to reload from older autosave. (I still haven't reset autosave frequency.)

  Adventure 2 - Doh's Report
Posted by: doh - January 17th, 2006, 23:46 - Forum: Civ4 Event Reports - Replies (7)

Joy of all joys! I thought the deadline was yesterday, but was too sick and busy to get on the computer. I'm not sure why it matters, but I'm glad to post my report.

Beginning Game

First, I recognize the awful starting position. Surely, I can't win from here. My first priorities will be to scout out to the west and find some good spots for second cities. Second, I know my weakness last game was not focusing enough on military and bringing enough military when on the offensive. So, I will also make sure to change that.

I get Buddhism and spend a lot of time scouting around. Hello, Highlands Map! Glad to meet you! Guess I shouldn't have expected Wheat anywhere near me. I eye the many resources though. I want a friendly Buddhist neighbor, so a missionary sneaks into the queue.

Eventually, I decide to play conservatively and build my second city on the same little peninsula.

I realize I'm not going to be able to outbuild my competition and decide war is inevitable. I run for Iron Working and unlock my special unit.

Everything is going smoothly at this point. I have military support, settlers off to build more cities, and a friendly neighbor. Right? Wrong.

Good ol JC blindsides a settling party and I'm suddenly at war. My mlitary is doing ok and I am able to clear all of his units out with my Jaguar army. I run across a Barbarian city ripe for the taking. It turns out I am slightly smarter than a monkey and am able to learn from my last game. This time I have enough military. The defenders are weakened (perhaps from JC) and I'm confident I can take this one.

So, a few years later, war is over and I have another city established. I'm starting to gain a foothold on my corner of the world. But, it looks like my score is slipping pretty poorly. Time to ramp it up.

Middle Game

This is when it all happens. The great turn that defines my game. When I finally rise from the bottom and begin to dominate. Or maybe not. Shortly after, Victoria sends a calling card. She declares war and faster than I can hit 'Print Screen', I've lost my two outer cities. I'm able to defend my peninsula, but this hurts a lot.

OK, I can rebound. The score difference is getting ridiculous though. After bartering for peace with Vicky, I build another city, raze a barb city, and start to build up again.

No matter what I do, I fall further behind in score. Rome hems me in and I focus my military buildup in my border city. No problem, I can hold out. Ummm.. War? What's that big stack?

End Game

So, that stack takes out my border city again and I'm back to my peninsula. Vicky also decides to jump back into the fray. I try desperately to build up enough forces in my first city, focusing on Grenadiers and Musketmen.

Not too shabby (for me, especially). I can hold out, Right? What could they have to get me?

Oh, I suppose that's better. One last shot of my final demise. I'm guessing that most people will have read Sirian's report before mine, so I hope this isn't a spoiler. With apologies to Sirian (and his CLASSIC endgame):

DoC Talking Head: "Well, Jim. A careful examination of the record shows that doh must have something up his sleeve. There is usually a Plan B and often frequently Plans C and D as well. We believe that we have found evidence in the record of suspicious activity. As you can see here, Jim and John, with the help of pure luck, Tenokitl... Tenochlit... Tenochilli... his last city will spawn a Great Person next time."

DoC Viewer: "How in the WORLD is that going to matter?"

DoC Talking Head: "Oh wait, sorry, wrong report."

I still think it's cool that I got a Great Person on my very last turn, just like Sirian. It was the final slap in the face from a tough (but fun) game. On the next turn, I lost all defenders and my city. Here's the shot.

  Adventure 2- Jester's Report
Posted by: Jester - January 17th, 2006, 20:17 - Forum: Civ4 Event Reports - Replies (5)

Wow, what a game. Seems like I got luckier than most.

The Report

For my opening, I immediately switched to a worker. I reckoned this was the strongest opening move, and, looking over the reports, I think I’m right.

I set research to polytheism, and I got it in 3480. We found Hinduism. Looking back, I think this is the single most important event of my game, or at least the key to my plans.

I didn’t opt for the Hydra strategy, or for a wonder monopoly. I decide a balance of wonders and early expansion is more valuable. This paid off for me, as far as I can see.

I decide to use the marble to get the Oracle, and the free tech goes to metal casing. This allows me to also grab the Colossus. I’m not sure how much that helped, but it didn’t hurt. These are the only two early wonders I got.

The rest of my focus was on using galleys to grab nice spots along our coast. I missed the “sheep” spot over by China, which some people got, but I also got a string of cities along the border with Caesar, putting my border much closer in to the Romans than most people’s. I even almost snagged the crabs in the south of “the lake” but the Chinese got there first.

I also settled fairly quickly in the east, grabbing the spot north of the sheep, and beating the Arabs to much of the good land. To keep my people fed, I windmilled over almost every hill in my territory. I will never, ever doubt the value of the windmill again.

I pretty much coast along in builder mode, with very minimal military power. This was made possible only by a strong conversion effort amongst both the Romans and the Chinese, who went Hindu early on, and never stopped. Caesar’s attention was directed against Vicky for most of the game, which was nice. She appeared to be running away with the game by the early 1000 ADs, but Caesar hosed her enough to let me be the first to liberalism, and the free tech.

Mansa Musa got similarily hosed, fighting Mao, Caesar and Alex on and off. Alex trailed in tech for most of the game, but had the largest empire, at the expense of the Arabs and Malinese. This is probably the big difference between my game and many others: Alex was always slightly bigger than Mao, who was slightly bigger than Caesar, although it was a close race all along. Vicky and Mansa got hosed, and Saladin was just sad. He tried invading me on and off, but I rolled him back, and stole two cities from him over the course of the game. Why he wanted to attack me, when Alex and Mao had his number, I have no idea. Saladin is weird.

In 1590, I pulled a lucky great engineer, and used him to build Versailles in the east. I doubt it made much of a difference, but every little bit helps.

My Statue of Liberty came late (although not Sirian late), and I managed to nab it in 1824. That was the fourth wonder I’d built, and I was amazed that I landed it.

I pushed my settlement frontier constantly into the east, which was largely unoccupied for most of the game. I lost a barbarian city to the Greeks by one turn, which annoyed me, but at least I managed to dominate the east quite handily.

By 1888, Saladin was gone. Vicky was super-hosed, with cities dropping to the Romans every few turns. I joined in against her on several occasions, at the request of Caesar and Mao. They were totally fake wars, but they netted me some very nice relationship points. Alex was big but backward, and Mansa was diminished enough to not worry about. However, Mao was pulling ahead in tech, and conquering more territory by the minute. I thought it was my fate to lose to my closest ally! However, the demographics kept saying Alex was in the lead for people and territory.

So, with my tech good-but-not-great, and Mao surging ahead, I decided that a diplomatic victory was my only chance. I plowed every beaker I could manage into a rush for Mass Media. I got there far before anyone else, and, with the help of an Ironworks in Tenochtitlan, I built the UN before anyone else had the tech.

I was elected UN secretary easily, on the weight of my growing empire, Caesar, and Mao, who were both totally loyal to me by this point. As predicted, Alex was my opponent, and he was deeply unpopular with everyone. However, when the first diplomatic victory vote came around, Team Montezuma was about 40 votes short of the goal. Alex wasn’t likely to catch up, but Mao was already building spaceship parts, and I needed this to end quickly. So, in 1912, I dialed up my friends in Rome and China, and told them it was time to wipe out our arch enemy… Mansa Musa! Then, the turn after we declared, Alex jumped in too!

Let me tell you, things did not go well for Mali. Caesar was backwards, but had dozens of cavalry. Mao was advanced, and could field huge armies of artillery and SAM infantry. But nothing prepared me for the sight of the SoDs that Alex put in the field. Huge armies of dozens of infantry, cavalry, artillery, and a few kitchen sinks started taking chunks out of Mansa Musa. The Romans and Chinese captured a couple cities each, and I grabbed one for myself, but Alex was rapidly eating away at the eastern Malinese front. However, everyone still hated Alex (or liked me much, much more).

However, to help seal the deal, I’d started a crash population program, founding four new cities, and farming all the arable land I could. Still, by the time of the second vote, I was still short of the mark. It wasn’t until the third vote, with the results coming during 1936, that I managed to hit the mark exactly. Mao, Caesar and yours truly had elected Montezuma the Emperor of the World. And it was no surprise that I was so beloved, either: Hinduism, my one and only religion, had spread to 55 cities, and represented 51% of the world’s faithful. I don’t think I’ve ever had a religion so successful, and the money sure helped overcome the poor starting position.

Mao, despite his huge tech lead, was so tied up in war that he never finished more than the 5 casings.

Diplomatic Victory, 1936.

Thanks for a great game!

Since my war with the roman I lag behind the others by a lot... I decided to turn taht aorund by conquering the romans and their pyramids. I construct my military and keep teching, getting backwards after each tech.

1090AD: Rome will pay!

After a few years of combat here the gain before I am forced to make peace if I don't want to loose Ramuh.. AI on that is stupid accepting peace even at teh doorstep of conquering a city.

But really the war didn't do much to help... Judhaism is spread quite a lot and keep spreading I got mao with me and much teh otehrs against me... I slowly lag behind to hit the bottom... only moved from there by the fallen civ, I don't think that getting the three headed hydra helped me much.. sure I hoped to go Cultural and thought that I could manage with only a few cities. nah the starting position and the course I didn't take (hit the sea and spread around it) killed me. I lost space ship in 1984 while going for cultural... I guess I can't steal a win this time wink Here the closest I got...

Even with my backward civ I have the best cities
[Image: soulowar_a218.jpg]

I don'T understand it much.. played one full game under it (now two) but all teh others were epic so my knowledge is biased. oh yeah vicky had a rocking start! now heading for adv-4 I guess. please grats my hydra wink
