* Quest: Isle of the Dead

Wyrm - 29 Jun 2007

It's never easy dealing with the dead, the dead are restless. The dead have no attachment to the world but they will not move on. It is better to leave the dead as they are.

Those are the words my father taught me. He was a disciple of Grenth, the god of death and ice, so it was hard for him to bear when I chose to devote myself to the gods Balthazar and Dwayna and become a Sunspear Paragon of Elona. Had he known that my days with the sunspears would bring me so close to the god he worshiped, he may not have taken my choice so hard. What do I mean by this? It is simple, as a sunspear I have faced many dangers, including the walking dead. One of these dangers came when Spearmarshal Kormir had us accompany her to Fahranur, the first city, in order to investigate some strange occurrences.

Melonni seemed to eager to earn the praises of Kormir, this meant she was certain to get us in trouble; she was out of touch with her natural instincts. Even so, my comrade, Ginger, and I were determined not to let ourselves fall victim to the walking dead; that would just be embarrassing. Kormir urged us onward and we entered the dead city. Ginger was very gung-ho about destroying the walking dead, a quality that would have been admirable had she waited for the support of Dunkoro to keep her alive. She died and was resurrected several times. In order to pass through this nightmarish place, we needed to place tomes on pedestals. I cannot say for how long we had to chase down one of the walking dead that had the tome we needed, but when we did finally catch up to him we smote him very convincingly. I am beginning to have a distaste for the walking dead.

In the next area of trial we needed two tomes to pass. This area also had the ghosts of former sunspears in it and Kormir bid us not attack them, even though she began to attack them herself. She is a strange woman. Ginger also discovered a trap mechanism that would spew forth fire and cause her great injury. She is a very strange woman. The passage tomes were collected easily enough and we found that if we kept moving, Kormir would leave the sunspear ghosts alone. We passed on to the next chamber.

The tome we needed for passage in this area had been taken already by a ghost. This ghost seemed to want to help us, but was very weak. Rather than just give us the tome he insisted on carrying it himself. My disdain for the walking dead is growing. We passed through this area, smiting the walking dead that dared to approach us. Eventually, the ghost managed to catch up to us and open passage to the next area within the dead city. Melonni was still far too eager to please Kormir.

This final area, as we would come to learn it was, housed yet more of the walking dead. We had an easy time pushing through them. On moving forward, however, we encountered a foe unlike anything any of us had ever seen before. It appeared as though it were a stone tablet, but when we approached it came alive and began attacking us, first as a mesmer, then a dervish, then a paragon. This was very troublesome indeed as it possessed the supernatural strength of a monster leader. That, combined with our still weak armor, led to this foe causing quite a lot of pain for us and we had to resurrect party members more frequently than would have been preferred. We were determined, however, to push through this enemy as we would let nothing stop us. Eventually, we were victorious. Ginger called us the "Bad News Bears" though I'm not exactly sure what she meant by that. Kormir seemed concerned. Melonni was still annoying as she tried to please Kormir.

We went back to Kamadan and Dehvad told us of walking dead that had escaped Fahranur and asked us to eliminate them. My distaste for the walking dead was growing at an exponential rate and so I agreed without hesitation. Ginger, too. We headed first to Issnur Isles. The walking dead here were hardly formidable, but nevertheless we were cautious. With Melonni gone things moved on more smoothly.

We next headed to Mehtani Keys. The enemies here were more of a threat than we had yet faced, but still hardly able to cause us injury. That is, to everyone except Ginger. Her gung-ho attitude, while noble, was still getting her killed and resurrected more often than we would have expected. Unfortunately, this was partly due to her lack of proper armor, but this was something we accepted could happen when we refused to live by the constrains of fashion and society. My spear was also quite dull at this point so I could not offer much in the way of damage, so I concentrated on motivating the party to keep going.

These concerns aside, we were victorious at eliminating the walking dead from Istan and so we returned to Dehvad to receive our next orders.
