Voices in the Wilderness

Take that, Kourna!
Progression:
* Mission: Consulate Docks
* Quest: Hunted!; The Great Escape

Wyrm - 29 Jun 2007

Bang! Boom! Splat!

That's pretty much how our attack on the Kournans goes. We step off the boats to meet heavy resistance. The fighting is chaotic. Kormir pushes the attack through. She won't stop or wait for anything. We must push forward or we'll be wiped out. I lose sight of my team so I just follow the mass of sunspears heading inland. The assault continues. I find my team with Kormir at the front, taking out the Kournan front line of defense. It's hard to fight with all the siege weapons striking everywhere, inflicting splash damage.

We push forward. Many sunspears die. Even more Kournans die. We break through the first line of defense. We kill the Kournan field marshal, ending the siege attacks, at least for now. I've got a headache from all the explosions. Ginger is covered with ashes and soot from the siege. She looks like a walking shadow. Wirr, too. We take the brief respite in the fighting to notice another companion. A Canthan that's chosen to live life by the rules of the wild. Zayisha, she calls herself. Uca, Lafeu, and Zed died in the siege and cannot be resurrected.

We again push forward, this time going for the outer gates and courtyard. The Kournans receive many reinforcements, so the battle is long and hard, but we prevail. Once through the courtyard we run into flame spitting siege weapons that are holding back another Istani vessel with sunspears. They want to join the fight and we want them to join in as well, so we kill the engineers working the machines and then, with the aid of the other sunspears, destroy the remaining Kournan forces.

We again make a push and find ourselves outside the inner courtyard, we only have to go up a lot of stairs to reach it. First though, we spot another field marshal calling down siege attacks on us. None of us like being hit by siege attacks all that much so we kill the marshal. As we begin climbing the stairs to the courtyard, we are again hit by siege attacks and find yet another field marshal, so we kill him as well. We have many warriors and archers to push through to get to the inner courtyard. When we do we come face to face with Varesh and it looks like the battle will be ended in our favor.

Unfortunately, Varesh has made a pact with Abaddon, the banished god. She uses the power he gave her to summon a massive amount of demons to attack us. That complicates things a bit and the battle quickly switches to us running for our lives. Kormir sacrifices herself so we can escape. We run. We keep running. That's all we can do against this massive assault by demons that seem to have come out of nowhere.

We aren't able to stop running until we reach a place called Yohlon Haven. When we count the missing and dead, we notice Koss is among those missing. We can't worry about that now though, since it's only a matter of time before the Kournans catch up with us here. We need to find someplace safe to hide. One of the locals tells us about a village nearby that might offer us help, so we head there. The elder says he won't let us stay there since that would bring trouble, but tells us there is a secret network of caves nearby that we can use, so long as we kill all the monsters currently inhabiting the place. That seems easy enough, and it is.

Once the area is secured we are finally able to relax, even though it's only momentary. This cave suits our team more than the spectacular cities like Kamadan, being closer to, and almost a part of, the wilderness. Our rest is cut short when we're told Koss has been found. Unfortunately, he's being held prisoner in a Kournan fortress. I suppose it was only a matter of time before we had to head to one of those. Zayisha seems to be adjusting to the different climate here as opposed to Cantha. One of these days I might just go to Cantha, but not until we've taken care of things here.

We leave this sanctuary for the time being and go find Nerashi, a scout that knows where Koss is. She points us in the right direction and it doesn't take long for us to find the fortress. Not that a huge fortress in the middle of nowhere would be hard to spot anyway. We consider sneaking around and executing surgical strikes, then remember that this is Koss we're going after and that he and surgical just don't mix, so we charge in and destroy the Kournan forces. And we find Koss. Dancing. Having a grand old time. Dork. Now that we're reunited, we head back to the sanctuary to plan our next move.
